Man City’s Rodri: a Premier League winner again

It was a dramatic finish to the 2021/22 English top flight season and while the dust is still settling, Rodri came into AS towers for a chat.

The 2021/22 Premier League season will go down as a classic.

Once again, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were favourites to retain their title, but many pundits and fans were pointing to big spenders Manchester United and recently crowned European Champions, Chelsea, as the main contenders. In the end those rivals were both very much left trailing and the title race went down the wire, as Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool pushed the Citizens to the final seconds of the 38-match campaign.

One of the stars of Guardiola’s domestic champions - that’s four in five years - is Spanish international, Rodri, and the midfielder popped into the AS offices in Madrid for a chat.

That win over Aston Villa, having been two goals down and into the final stages of the game, was, to a large degree, down to the 25-year old. He has proved himself to be a ready replacement for the outgoing Fernandinho and gives Guardiola an aggression and skill level in the middle of the park that provides an anchor for all the positive work that goes on ahead of him, especially as Erling Haaland joins the ranks in the summer.

Among the topics covered with the Madrid-born star, other than the dramatic final day celebrations, of course, were the Champions League objective - something that remains elusive - next year’s domestic and European assault, and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at the end of the calendar year, as he lines up for his national team.

Find out what Rodri had to say on all this and more, when we bring you the full interview on Wednesday.
