United beat rivals on big night at Old Trafford
What a result for the Red Devils!! Few people predicted this.
It's true that Liverpool were poor tonight, but take nothing away from United, who will hope this is a catalyst for some momentum building.
Next up for the victors it's Southampton away, while the Reds have Bournemouth at home.
Peep, peep, peeeep!!! The final whistle blows and United have a big, big win.
The ball has been worked into the Liverpool corner and Ten Hag will be happy that it stays there.
Clever play from United who manage to clear their lines and then slow things up in the midfield, Martial drawing a foul from van Dijk. That will waste a few more minutes as the final whistle approaches.
There will be five added minutes... and Jürgen Klopp is not a happy man with that. I can understand his frustration based on the stoppages this half.
Time is ticking away here, too slowly for the hosts, too quickly for their guests.
We'll find out how many more minutes will be added. Should be quite a few.
The visitors are applying more pressure again but that is ended with Trent having a strike from around 30 yards. It's a clean enough hit but well wide, and the local support make that clear.
Now Cristiano Ronaldo steps on as part of a three-man change. Given the current flow of play, is the Portuguese star on to help defend crosses???
GOAL!! Salah heads home
The introduction of young Carvalho has added a little spark and it was his smart turn and shot that created the goal, excellently saved by De Gea but the Egyptian King was on hand to drill a header down and in. Game on!
Some better football from the Anfield club results in De Gea tipping round the post from Firmino.
Half chances being created at both ends of the pitch in the last few minutes. Rashford, looking like a new player today, tricks his way into a shooting position and fires just over. Diaz almost avoids the block but the red wall holds well.
Oh, and Bruno got a booking for a ridiculous dive in the Liverpool penalty area. Embarrassing.
With twenty minutes left to play, United players and fans must be in disbelief at how few problems they've been caused.
Opening goalscorer Sancho has been replaced by Fred so Ten Hag is sensibly targeting a solid last period to hold onto what would be a very special, and surprising, victory.
Fabinho gets a header at goal but it's easy for De Gea to gather. Liverpool's best hope at the moment is to mesmerize the United players with their new white and black kit. Not a classic and painful to stare at for too long.
An air kick from Firmino, a misplaced pass from Elliot, a poorly judged run from Salah.
The last few minutes have been a collection of errors from the side expected to push City for the title. On the evidence of today, neither of these sides will be.
Tails up from the home side and the crowd is helping. Those fans must be wondering what has happened here tonight.
Fabinho has replaced Henderson as Klopp looks to change their fortunes. Things are not clicking though.
United now trying to capitalise on the situation, that goal coming against the run of play, and Alisson is called into action.
Good control from Varane in the area sees him lay off to Rashford whose accurately placed effort if turned around the post.
GOAL!! Rashford makes it two!
It's horrible control in the midfield by Henderson which allows United to break into the open space. Rashford is one-on-one with Alisson, gives him the eyes, and slides it straight ahead into the near post.
Very tidy finish!
Trent has, rightly, been questioned over some of his defending but he's just shown what he offers going forward, skipping past two defenders before firing a low cross in hope of finding a friendly foot. It doesn't.
From the corner, Salah is free at the back for a volley but skies it.
Immediately Liverpool are back on the attack, a couple of plays getting them into the area but not into a clear enough space for a shot.
United will be happy enough if they can keep it as tight as this for the next 45, but surely the Reds will find some opportunities. They almost always do.

Martial is on for Elanga, likely looking to target Trent.
Half-time musings
Sancho's goal is the difference so far and the way he feigned a shot to throw Milner onto the deck, as well as the build up to that moment, was lovely.
It was such a positive start from the hosts, who took advantage, it must be said, of an utterly lacklustre beginning from Liverpool. Ten Hag may end up rueing not getting another goal during those 15 or so minutes as the flow of the match has certainly shifted ever since.
Klopp may make a change at half-time - potentially Fabinho for Milner - to add even more solidity to a team that has dominated for the last 30 mins, especially as the 36-year-old midfielder has been booked, and is off the pace. As I said in the build-up, the long list of injuries at Anfield mean options are limited.
Peeep! As the whistle blows for the break, United players surround the referee to complain about some stuff, possibly the booking to Dalot.
We'll have one added minute, and as we do, Dalot crashes into Diaz - big cheer from the home crowd - and Liverpool have a freekick to deliver from wide on the left.
It's a decent ball in but United get it away and the danger is over. As is the first half.
Madness! United with a huge escape.
This pressure leads to Bruno clearing his line, slicing it hard towards his own goal but is saved blushes as it smacks off Martinez standing on the line.
It's all Liverpool now. More slick exchanges worked down the right create space for a Diaz layoff to Salah but the wall of red does its job.
That control continues to grow from Klopp's side, and their best passage of play, neat passes that open up United's defence, ends with a Varane block.
In saying that, it's been a poor performance from them so far. That midfield not convincing.
A little more pressure from Liverpool now, as United appear to have dropped back happy to use the counter. Diaz beats Dalot down the left and wins a corner. Nothing comes of it but certainly signs that they may have remembered how to play this game.
First real decent chance for the visitors as Salah dinks a ball to Henderson on the edge of the area. It's a fairly standard volley for a professional footballer but the Englishman sclaffs it and De Gea watches it bounce harmlessly wide.
Elanga is happy to run at Trent whenever he gets a chance and as Gomez doubles up he appears to trip the United man and another dangerous freekick is handed to Eriksen.
Alisson is called into action this time as the Brazilian tips the inswinger over. It may have been sneaking in.
More slack play from the visitors in midfield (do they think it's still preseason?) and Rashford is sent free into the right channel. Just as he's about to pull the trigger a strong Gomez challenge ensure Alisson has nothing to do.
Liverpool have offered very little so far. United working hard to limit space.
GOAL!! Sancho puts United ahead
It's no more than the hosts deserve. Some tidy play around the Liverpool area eventually finds the feet of Sancho in the middle of the box. Inexplicably he has time to control, turn, dummy a defender and pick his spot.
Very nicely done!
United have started the better - being slow out of the blocks something we are getting used to seeing from Klopp of late - and that is helping the locals create a cracking atmosphere.
Elanga off the post!
What a chance for United, Elanga is all alone when the ball breaks to him from some excellent pressing from his teammates and just has Alisson to beat, the goal gaping.
The Swede does slide the ball past the keeper but as the stadium erupts in celebration it rebounds off the upright, and Liverpool manage to clear.
We're very much going from end to end in these early stages, the latest seeing some sloppy defending from Trent Alexander-Arnold hand Eriksen a deadball opportunity just outside the box.
The free-kick hits the wall and over for a corner. The hosts giving as good as they're getting so far.
We're back up the other end and Milner finds himself inside the opposition area, the furthest forward from the visitors.
The veteran midfielder never looked to have complete control of the situation but almost got away from the covering defenders, in the end falling over with a slight nudge and giving referee Michael Edwards that hopeful look.

Rashford is released by Bruno and the crowd are on their feet early - and not to walk out in protest!
From my angle the English striker had the advantage on van Dijk but then the big man steps it up and blocks with ease. Class defending.
A couple of tasty challenges from the hosts will remind Liverpool that this is a derby, like they needed any reminder.
The Reds get the first chance to create but it's next to the right corner flag and too much of a stretch for Diaz. Both teams settling into the game.

Talking about a huge ovation, the new signing from Real Madrid - one with five Champions League to his name with Los Blancos - was given a brilliant welcome as he is paraded in front of the home fans.
How he adapts in this team will have to wait for another day, but he'll be a very interested observer.

The teams are in the tunnel and we're about to hear a massive cheer as they step out in front of the supporters.
Kids' coach attacked by protesting fans
It may have been a misunderstanding but that is hardly an excuse for what has reportedly taken place outside Old Trafford.
The 'Glazers out' protests have appeared to be very peaceful but this report suggests the anger has spilled over to throwing objects at a passing bus which happened to be full of kids coming to the game.
Not a great look, guys.

Ten Hag tactics change?
OK, you'll have plenty of my thoughts for the next couple of hours so here's the view of Adrian Clarke on what United may try tonight.
Erik ten Hag wants his side to play out from the back and become an accomplished possession-based team.
However, during defeats to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, Ten Hag’s players passed the ball poorly and with a lack of confidence.
Losing possession cheaply in bad areas, a number of United’s players have looked edgy when put under pressure inside their own half.
Fabinho dropped for Reds
It's not often we see a Liverpool midfield for big games without Brazilian holder Fabinho. But he's sitting out tonight.
That could be Klopp giving him a reminder that no one's place is guaranteed - especially with Keita reportedly having a moan about not playing enough (check your injury record, Naby!) - or, more likely, a tactical approach to United's predicted style.
Harvey Elliot starting is a big plus for the Reds. His exciting and direct play gets fans off their seats, while the front three of Salah, Diaz and Firmino (the latter in for naughty Nuñez) is more than capable of bagging a few.
Rashford leading the line
With Cristiano on the bench, I'd expect United are hoping to take advantage of the quick counter attack when their opponents lose the ball. Rashford will likely spend most of his time on the last defender, flanked by Elanga and Sancho. That's plenty of pace to have Van Dijk and co thinking.
The creativity of Eriksen and Fernandes together is unquestionable but is a brave choice from Ten Hag, and leaves McTominay with a heavy workload to protect his backline.
The opening few minutes will give us a clearer idea of how they will attempt to contain their guests.
Substitutional difference
Before we dip into analysing the starting XIs tonight, it's worth paying attention to the benches. United's, in names at least, appears to be full of talent and experience, offering Erik ten Hag plenty of options to mix things up if it doesn't go to plan.
Klopp, though, is feeling those missing players and has few recognised stars to come on. That said, Carvalho is a very clever player, and Fabinho usually one of the first names on the teamsheet.

As you may have heard, there are some new protests going on around Old Trafford tonight, actions that threaten this game going ahead. For any under-rock dwellers this is all to do with the desire to see the back of debt-building owners, the Glazer family.
Solutions are afoot...
Michael Knighton has reached out to Sir Alex Ferguson to help him buy Manchester United from the Glazers due to the massive decline in the club’s fortunes in recent years.
The businessman was a board member at Old Trafford between 1989 to 1992 when Ferguson had recently been appointed as the manager.
Casemiro send off from Madrid
“Casemiro is a legend. He has earned to decide what he wants to do for everything he has given us. We will pay tribute to him in recognition of how much he has given to this club,” club president Florentino Pérez told DAZN, ahead of Real Madrid’s victory over Celta Vigo.
Madrid, in the emotional statement (“Real Madrid is and always will be your home”), confirmed the Brazilian’s move to Manchester United. At 11.30 am local time on Monday morning, Real Madrid City was decked out to say goodbye to the midfielder, with Florentino leading the ceremony.

Ahead of the team news being announced, it's worth noting that United have pretty much their whole squad to choose from. The one notable exception is the name of new signing from Real Madrid, Casemiro, who was not registered by the Friday deadline.
Liverpool, on the other hand, are without Jota, Jones, Konate, Matip, Nuñez and Thiago, among others.
