Manchester United obsessed with Cole Palmer move despite his denial: How much the Chelsea star could cost

Blunt and laced with sarcasm, Cole Palmer dismissed rumors linking him to Manchester United just two weeks ago. Asked about a possible move to Old Trafford next season, the Chelsea forward laughed it off.

“I find it funny,” Palmer said.

His response seemed to shut down any suggestion of contact between player and club. It has not stopped United from pushing forward. Club executives are said to be fixated on Palmer and are willing to make a record-breaking move to land the 23-year-old England international.

Chelsea hold firm on “untouchable” star

At Stamford Bridge, Palmer is viewed as central to a project that still lacks clear direction. Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League are all but gone, a failure that already cost Liam Rosenior his job after he replaced Enzo Maresca in January.

With four games remaining, Chelsea sit 10 points off fifth place. Even a Europa League spot is far from guaranteed, and Conference League qualification remains uncertain.

Despite those struggles, Chelsea retain full control over Palmer’s future. He is under contract through 2033 and, along with Moisés Caicedo, is considered the most valuable player in the squad. The club will not entertain offers below $175 million.

Record fee could test Chelsea’s resolve

That figure would surpass last summer’s Premier League record, when Liverpool paid a similar amount to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle. Chelsea have no intention of selling one of their brightest stars, but internally there is acknowledgment that a truly record-breaking offer could force a decision.

Publicly, the stance is clear: Palmer is “untouchable.” Privately, the message is more flexible.

United’s plan: convince Palmer first

At Old Trafford, the approach is simple. Whatever it takes.

The first hurdle is the player himself. Reports in England earlier this year suggested Palmer was unhappy in London and missed Manchester, his hometown. That is when initial contact was made with people close to him.

His public comments, however, caught intermediaries off guard.

“Maybe I’d miss it if I didn’t go back for three months,” Palmer said. “But when I return, I realize there’s nothing there for me. I have no plans to leave Chelsea.”

Those remarks cooled momentum, at least publicly. Behind the scenes, sources involved in the situation insist the comments were designed to calm Chelsea fans during a tense stretch for the club. They maintain Palmer would be open to returning home.

“If he wants it, it’ll happen,” one source told AS.

Champions League return could fuel move

If Palmer signals interest, United are ready to go all in.

The club is one point away from securing a return to the Champions League after a two-year absence. Qualification would bring both prestige and a significant financial boost, strengthening United’s position in the transfer market.

There will be money to spend. And almost certainly, a saga to match.

This one has all the makings of the summer’s longest-running transfer story.
