Los Angeles Galaxy confirmed on Wednesday the signing of Uruguayan defender Martín Cáceres, who arrives on a free transfer. The 35-year-old will play with the MLS side through the end of the 2022 regular season with a club option for 2023.

Martín is a highly experienced and versatile defender that brings leadership, strong mentality and more championship pedigree to our team,”said LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. “We look forward to quickly integrating him into the group for the final phase of the season.”

The impact Cáceres needs to have on defense

The Galaxy has been struggling on defense all season-long and they have shipped a total of 37 goals in 25 games, the seventh most in the Western Conference. Fans of the club are hoping that the impact that Martín Cáceres should be immediate with only 10 games left in the regular season remaining and the Galaxy fighting for a playoff spot.

Cáceres could also provide various solutions to the Galaxy on defense because he can play as a fullback and as a center back. Especially with the imminent departure of Julián Araujo to Porto, the Uruguayan defender can fill in that position with the lack of depth chart that the MLS side has in that position.
