Mexico confirm ‘Tecatito’ Corona ruled out of 2022 World Cup in Qatar
The Sevilla forward has failed to recover in time from a serious ankle injury, and won’t be included in El Tri’s final World Cup squad.
Mexico have confirmed that Jesús Manuel ‘Tecatito’ Corona won’t be part of Gerardo Martino’s 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup.
Corona suffered major ankle injury in summer
News of Corona’s absence had been expected, as it seemed unlikely that the Sevilla forward would be back in time to go to Qatar.
On Tuesday, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) revealed that the 29-year-old hasn’t yet fully recovered from a fractured fibula and torn ankle ligaments.
Corona, who joined LaLiga side Sevilla from Portuguese champions Porto in January, suffered the injury in a training session with his club in August.
“Mexican national-team staff will continue to monitor his progress, and we hope that Jesús enjoys a swift, successful return to action,” an FMF statement said.
Mexico World Cup squad to be confirmed next week
Corona is the first of five players who will have to be cut from Mexico’s preliminary, 31-man World Cup list. Martino is to announce his final squad for the tournament on Monday 14 November.
