Miguel Herrera’s daughter trolls América
Mishelle Herrera took to social media to comment on Mexico’s group game against Costa Rica, and send a message to América fans.

Mexico and Costa Rica played out a 0-0 draw in the final Group A match of the 2025 Gold Cup on Sunday, leaving fans with more tension than goals.
The game had generated plenty of buzz beforehand, largely due to Costa Rica’s head coach Miguel Herrera—known as much for his fiery personality as his tactical acumen. But despite the anticipation, the game itself unfolded without major drama on the field.

Pura vida
Off the pitch, however, the spotlight shifted to Herrera’s daughter, Mishelle. She took to Instagram during the match to post a selfie wearing her father’s Costa Rica jersey, accompanied by a pointed caption: “Weren’t we supposed to get crushed? We’ve got a three-time Champions League winner in goal too.” The barb was a clear nod to Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas, whose standout performance helped secure the draw
Mishelle Herrera’s Instagram post wasn’t just a cheeky jab—it stirred up deeper emotions among América fans. Her comment, praising Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas as a “three-time Champions League winner,” was widely interpreted as a subtle dig at Mexico’s current goalkeeper, Luis Ángel Malagón, who won three Liga MX titles with América. The comparison raised eyebrows, especially considering her father, El Piojo Herrera, once led América to two of its most iconic championships.
Miguel Herrera’s legacy with the Mexican club is hard to overstate. He coached América to a legendary comeback win over Cruz Azul in the rain-soaked final of May 2013—one of the most dramatic in Liga MX history—and again lifted the trophy in December 2018, once more defeating Cruz Azul. That history makes Mishelle’s apparent slight toward the club all the more surprising, and it’s sparked debate among fans about loyalty, legacy, and the fine line between playful banter and pointed criticism.
With Sunday’s draw, Mexico and Costa Rica officially secured their tickets to the quarterfinals, finishing first and second respectively in Group A, respectively. It sets up two high-stakes matchups this Saturday.
