Miguel “Piojo” Herrera puts Atlante on par with two historic Liga MX clubs
Atlante are back in Liga MX and coach “Piojo” Herrera promises they’re not returning just to participate. “We’re coming back to fight”.

Atlante FC is officially back in Liga MX, taking over Mazatlán’s spot starting with the Apertura 2026. And the club isn’t easing into its return — it’s coming in with Miguel “Piojo” Herrera at the helm, a coach known for intensity, ambition, and zero interest in playing small.

“We’re not here to be anyone’s sparring partner”
Speaking on ESPN’s Futbol Picante, Herrera made the club’s mission crystal clear: Atlante isn’t returning to the top flight just to fill a seat.
“Our goal is to fight for a spot in the Liguilla,” he said. “We’re not here to be anybody’s warm‑up act.”
Herrera emphasized that the team will compete from Day 1, aiming to reestablish Atlante as a serious contender rather than a nostalgic footnote.
"Atlante está en el nivel de historia que América y Chivas. Vamos a regresar con todo y desde el inicio buscar estar en la Liguilla" 💥

A giant returns — and wants its place back
The former Mexico national team coach highlighted the historical weight of the Potros de Hierro, insisting that Atlante belongs in the same conversation as the country’s biggest clubs.
“Atlante has a long, rich history,” Herrera said. “After Chivas and América — who have a few more years — we’re right there. If we’re coming back, we’re coming back with everything. We’re here to fight.”
With Herrera’s fire, a fresh Liga MX slot, and a fan base hungry for relevance, Atlante’s return isn’t just symbolic. It’s a statement — and the rest of the league is officially on notice.
