MLS: how long will Pedro de la Vega be out of action for after latest injury?

Pedro de la Vega’s MLS story has started on a bittersweet note. As confirmed by Seattle Sounders, the Argentinian will be out for the next six to eight weeks after suffering a hamstring injury. Signed from Lanús for $7.5 million, De la Vega has already managed one goal in two appearances for the club and his absence will be felt by a team that has positioned him as its new leader.

“We’re going to take things slowly to make sure he’s fully fit so this doesn’t happen again,” Seattle coach Brian Schemtzer said. “There are some issues that the coaches want to work out before we move on. It’s been a tough blow because you saw glimpses of how good and influential he can be.” Before joining his new club, the player had to leave Argentina’s Pre-Olympic training camp after suffering from a muscular problem. A little more than two months later, the former Lanús player will be out of action for an even longer period of time.

During his time in the Argentine league, De la Vega had a series of injuries, suffering a cruciate ligament tear that kept him out for nearly 250 days. However, Seattle is confident in the player’s physicality on the premise that it won’t be a regular occurrence. “He played about 30 games last year for Lanús, so we know he’s durable,” Schemtzer said. “What happened in the Argentina U-23s and what happened in the preseason (hamstring discomfort), we’re going to correct that.” The Argentinian is expected to be available again in early May.
