Mo Salah signs new, three-year contract with Liverpool
After months of speculation regarding his future, Mohamed Salah has committed to Liverpool, signing a new long-term contract with the Reds.
Mohamed Salah has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool - new which will come as a huge relief to Reds fans. There had been growing speculation over Salah’s future but the Egyptian signed a new deal on Friday - exactly 12 months to the day when he would have been able to leave Anfield as a free agent. Salah’s previous contract was due to expire in June 2023 and while he insisted that he would still be at Liverpool for the new season, there was little or no sign that he might renew terms. News of Salah’s new contract comes just days after strike partner Sadio Mané, whose contract was also up next summer, left to join Bayern Munich.
Silverware in 2022
The 2021/22 campaign was a successful one for Liverpool collectively and for Salah on a personal level. Jürgen Klopp’s troops won the two domestic cups and came as close as they could to adding more silverware to their season’s haul - just missing out on the Premier League by one point and losing the Champions League final by the minimum to Real Madrid; Salah, meanwhile picked up the FWA Footballer of the Year, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards and the Premier League Golden Boot, which he shared with Son Heung-min - the division’s joint-top scorers with 23 goals each.
Salah has gone from strength to strength since his move to Anfield in 2017. In just five years he already has a number of club records under his belt - he is Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League with 34 goals. So far, he is on 156 goals from 254 first team appearances, coming in at No.9 in the list of maximum goal scorers in club history with the second highest goals per game-ratio, 1.63.
Happy day
The Egyptian told Liverpool’s official website: “I feel great and I’m excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone. It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next. I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going on an upward path. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies. I think we are in a good position to fight for everything. We have new signings as well. We just need to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and go for everything again.”
