Rayados has had its sights set on Matías Almeyda as its next head coach - and now that plan is set to come to fruition. Pending an official announcement, the Argentine manager will return to Mexico to take over the Monterrey-based club.

Rayados reel in first choice

After weeks of negotiations - including a meeting in Madrid - Almeyda has given Rayados the green light to join forces in reshaping the club’s sporting project ahead of next season. An official confirmation is expected in the coming days.

While Monterrey explored other candidates in the market, Almeyda was always the top choice. He has not coached in Liga MX since his successful stint with Chivas Guadalajara from 2015 to 2018, where he captured both the Liga MX title and the CONCACAF Champions League.

A long-term target for Monterrey

Following his time in Guadalajara, Almeyda moved to MLS with the San Jose Earthquakes. Years later, he made the jump to Europe, managing AEK Athens in Greece and most recently Sevilla in Spain.

However, Rayados’ pursuit of Almeyda isn’t just a recent development - it dates back several years. The first approach came in 2019, but the coach declined to continue talks as he was fully committed to his project in San Jose.

“A club like Monterrey is a temptation for any coach - it has a very strong squad, it’s a wonderful organization, and any manager would jump at the opportunity,” he said in October of that year.

Years later, in 2025, Monterrey came calling again and re-opened discussions, but Sevilla entered the picture, and the chance to compete in LaLiga ultimately proved more attractive to Almeyda. Now, following his departure from the Spanish club and with the freedom to choose his next move, he appears set to don Rayados colors.

That’s how Monterrey’s new structure is taking shape: Dennis te Kloese as president of soccer operations, Walter Erviti as sporting director, and Matías Almeyda as head coach.
