New revelation adds to question marks surrounding Mascherano’s sudden Inter Miami exit
Javier Mascherano last week resigned as head coach of Inter Miami, in an abrupt departure that took the locker room by surprise.
Javier Mascherano stepped down as Inter Miami’s head coach last week, and his departure from the MLS club continues to spark controversy. Now, in a development that is once again fueling debate, reports suggest the former Barcelona midfielder did not say goodbye to his players in person.
Messi clash behind Mascherano exit?
According to Diario Olé, Mascherano’s exit unfolded in the strangest possible way. He did not hold a formal farewell with the squad and instead informed the players of his decision via phone messages, telling them he would no longer be in charge of the Herons.
The silence surrounding the Argentine’s departure has only intensified speculation about a possible falling-out with Lionel Messi, the player who has effectively pulled the strings at the club since his arrival in 2023.
What is now known is that Mascherano left Miami last Friday and returned to Buenos Aires. By that point, he had not had any face-to-face contact with Inter Miami’s players and only attended a farewell dinner with part of his coaching staff.
“Super grateful for him”
Speaking in the mixed zone last Friday, Inter Miami defender Ian Fray said that players inside the locker room were surprised by “El Jefecito’s” departure. Fray added that he had reached out to his former boss.
“I sent him a text message thanking him,” Fray said. “He knows how I feel. I was super grateful for him.”
While the official version remains that Mascherano stepped away for personal reasons, as time passes the rumor of a possible clash with Messi - and that it ultimately pushed him out - continues to grow louder.
