World Cup 2030

No consequences for the World Cup

FIFA maintains confidence in Spain despite incidents in Barcelona, which would likely lead only to minor sanctions and would not affect the World Cup or the planned final at the Bernabéu.

Update:

What unfolded Tuesday night in Barcelona left a mark in every sense, not only on Spanish soccer but also on Spain’s broader push to co-host a World Cup with Portugal and Morocco four years from now.

Once again, the fight against racism in soccer has been called into question, echoing concerns raised in recent years by players such as Vinícius Júnior. This time, officials say the issue cannot be dismissed as the actions of a few isolated individuals. Instead, hundreds of fans were involved in chanting that was widely described as discriminatory, offensive, and completely out of line.

The images and reports from the stadium speak for themselves.

Spain’s World Cup ambitions under renewed scrutiny

In the hours before the match, the president of the Spanish football federation reiterated confidence that Spain is on track to host the World Cup final.

While nothing has formally changed in that regard, the events in Barcelona have caused reputational damage. They come on the heels of other high-profile incidents, including racist behavior in the stands during a Real Madrid match at Benfica’s stadium in Lisbon and controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations final held in Morocco.

FIFA is said to value the Spanish federation’s immediate response. Officials followed protocol by informing the referee and formally addressing the situation both verbally and in writing, emphasizing the seriousness of what had occurred.

Federation leadership condemns incident

Federation president Rafael Louzán spoke after the match, condemning the racist chants in strong terms.

Before his public remarks, he also issued apologies to the Egyptian ambassador in Spain and to football officials from the African nation involved. Federation staff reportedly reacted quickly once the chants began, first addressing anti-government slogans directed at Pedro Sánchez and then responding to the racist abuse that followed.

Spain vs Egypt referee chose not to activate anti-racism protocol

Match officials were informed of what was happening in the stands. However, the referee ultimately decided not to activate the anti-racism protocol, concluding that the situation did not require the match to be halted.

According to that assessment, the best course of action for the game and everyone involved was to continue playing.

Could Spain be punished for racist chants?

Spain continues to enjoy FIFA’s full confidence regarding its World Cup hosting role. Any disciplinary outcome is expected to be based on the referee’s official report.

Potential sanctions would likely be limited to financial penalties or partial stadium closures for future matches. There is no expectation of consequences that would affect Spain’s role in the tournament or the proposed final venue, with Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu still viewed as the leading candidate.
