NY Red Bulls progress in the Leagues Cup after tense derby victory over NYC FC
The game got off to a slow start with few chances for either side in the early stages. That all changed on the half-hour mark when the lively Luquinhas was brought down in the box and a penalty awarded to the hosts.
Up stepped Bronx-born Omir Fernandez to convert the spot kick and take his personal tally in this fixture to four.
In the second half City began to push more but RB's high-pressing style disrupted their build-up play and prevented Nick Cushing's side from utilising the width from their wing backs.
NYCFC managed to fashion a few half chances in the last 15 minutes but there was nothing to trouble Coronel in the RB goal in the final stages.
A 1-0 victory was a fair result on the balance of play and NY Red Bulls will face Philadelphia Union in the Leagues Cup Round of 16.
RB celebrate after eliminating NYC
The 26th Hudson River Derby saw the two New York franchise playing for a place in the Leagues Cup Round of 16. It was a keenly fought affair but the hosts just edged it with a first half penalty from Fernandez.

Free kick on the halfway line now and City have a real opportunity to deliver.
The ball is headed clear but City come again, firing the ball into the box, but the ball ends up in Coronel's hands.

The corner ball is wasted but City regain possession and look to force it forward once more.
City are really pushing now but the sheer number of RB bodies in the box is keeping them at bay.
Deep delivery from Cufre on the left is cleared for a NYC corner ball. Big chance to get the ball in now...
City work a decent opening for Parks on the edge of the box but the young midfielder refuses the offer, choosing instead to keep possession.
The ball is eventually swung in from the right but the quality is poor and RB win a goal kick.
Six minutes of added time at the Red Bull Arena
Drew Yearwood battles through a series of challenges in the midfield to win a throw in for Red Bulls on the right. He has been a useful addition in the past 20 minutes.
NYC FC are starting to go long as the full time whistle approaches. They don't really have the personnel for it, but they don't have anything to lose now.
The energy levels of NY Red Bulls, even at this late stage, is something to behold.
86 minutes into a draining knockout tie and they are continuing to hustle City's backline and have managed to maintain the press.
A bit of a scrappy spell as we approach the final five minutes of normal time.
The Red Bulls will be happy with how the final stages are going but they have not managed to close the game out. You get the sense that there is another chance left in this game for City.
Great work from Yearwood to win a corner from nothing for NY RB. The corner is swung in towards Reyes who fails to connect and Martins is down with an injury for City.
Double change for the hosts; Fernandez and Luquinhas are replaced by Stroud and Carmona.

That was the best chance of the game for the visitors, and it was so easy.
A neat ball from Parks finds Gray sprinting down the right flank and into the box. He has options in the box but opts to shoot on goal. Coronel is equal to the effort in the RB goal.
Luquinhas (Red Bulls)
The Red Bulls forward darts onto a loose ball in the NYC box and immediately takes a tumble.
The referee blows his whistle and the home crowd briefly cheer, before realising that the foul has been awarded for a dive. Luquinhas gets a booking for his play-acting.
They don't do that. Instead, Red Bulls play the free kick short and then dink the ball harmlessly to the goalkeeper.
A bit of a waste, there.
Foul to Red Bulls midway through the NYC half, once again the result of powerful running by Luquinhas.
This is a real chance for the hosts to get the ball into the box towards their big targets.
Big change for the hosts as striker Vanzeir is replaced by Manoel.
Twenty minutes to go now and the tension is ramped up once again.
City are sticking to their ball-playing philosophy for now, but before too long Nick Cushing will want his team to start pushing more for the eqauliser.
Reyes is back on the field now, restored to the heart of the defence. City are struggling to pick their way through RB's energetic midfield structure.

The RB central defender goes down clutching his face after winning another commanding header on the halfway line. The Colombian defender appeared to smack his face on the back of a City player's head in the process.
It looks like he will be fine to continue.
Two changes for Red Bull now, bringing some fresh legs into the mix.
Those subs are Barlow for Yearwood and Harper for Duncan
The game is getting stretched now and it looks like Red Bulls are preparing a substitution.
With half an hour to go now both teams are flying into challenges and the crowd are on their feet
More good play from Luquinhas to steal the ball in the corner flag and drive into the penalty box. He looks to pull the ball back to the edge of the box but City manage to snuff out the chance.

Real chance for NYC and the first real opening for Bakrar!
He is set free down the left wing and drives towards goal. he looks to work the ball onto his right foot but ends up poking a weak effort to goal.
Two bookings, one for each team, after a coming together near the touchline.
For NYC Parks is booked, and goalscorer Fernandez for the hosts.

It's almost a mirror image at the other end of the pitch. Once again it's Luquinhas who goes down, but a little to easily this time.
After that early rally from NYCFC, the hosts are starting to force their way back into the game now. Luquinhas continues to be the real danger for Red Bulls and he wins another corner from the left.
Chance! NY Red Bull
A corner ball is whipped in to the back post and Reyes is there to connect. The big defender makes good contact but his header is wide of the goal.
The free kick from the right is fired low and hard by Cufre but it cannons back off the wall.
A bit of a waste given the good positioning, but NYC do finally appear to be on top.

A long ball from the City goalkeeper finds Bakrar running through on goal. The Algerian forward is hauled down by Reyes.
Pellegrini and Haak come on for NYCFC, replacing Ledesma and Jasson.

NY Red Bulls have a narrow lead but it's all to play for at the Red Bull Arena at the break.
The winner of this NY derby clash will play the winner of Philadelphia Union vs DC United in the next round. It's still goalless in Philly at half time.

Home side take the lead at the break
The NY Red Bulls have a one-goal advantage at half time and they will be frustrated not to have increased the lead. The game was fairly even for the first 30 minutes but a penalty, awarded for a foul on the lively Luquinhas, gave the home side real impetus.
They came close to doubling their advantage towards the end of the half but it remains 1-0 at the break.

A cagey game that really caught fire after the goal, with Red Bulls unlucky not to be further ahead.
Not long to go in the first half now.
A series of big tackles fly in, before the referee is eventually forced to pause the game. Plenty of whole-hearted challenges in the opening 45 and the man in the middle is doing well to keep the game flowing.
Red Bulls have been so good at wining the ball in dangerous positions, managing to launch attacks at the heart of the NYC defence.

Crazy end to the half as NYC go up the other end and manufacture a chance of their own.
Sands has a shot blocked from the edge of the box.
Penalty?! No penalty.
This time it's Vanzeir who darts onto the ball in the NYC box, only to be bundled off the ball by Jasson. Referee says no penalty, and he's probably correct.
"Let's go Red Bulls, Let's go Red Bulls, Let's go Red Bulls" rings around the stadium.
This is all RBNY now and the home crowd are spurring the side on.
More brilliant play from Luquinhas to skip though the NYC defence but he can't find the final ball.
More good play down the right by Harper. He is eventually dispossessed in the corner but his hard running has generated chances in the last ten minutes.

Two chances in quick succession for the host!
The first came from a brilliant run from Harper down the right, firing in on goal.
The second was the result of another successive press from RB, forcing NYC to give up the ball on the edge of their own box. The ball falls to Vanzeir but the frontman can only fire wide.
Luquinhas heads off on another mazy run down the left, cutting inside and driving towards the edge of the box. NYC repel the ball but it's not cleared...
The game has got noticeably more fractious since that opening goal. Both sides have been spurred on by that penalty strike and the referee is doing his best to cool things down.
NYCFC win a free kick as the rain starts to fall down.

The hosts are on top now and their high-pressing style is causing real problems for NYC.
A brilliant through ball from Amaya finds Fernandez in space on the right but he isn't able to get free of RB defenders.

He coolly slots the ball into the right hand side of the net, sending Freese the wrong way.

The noise has increased since that NYC chance, the home crowd are looking to respond.

Brief delay as the Red Bulls' stopper goes down to receive some treatment. Nothing serious, he's soon back on his feet.

Finally a piece of real quality as Rodriguez cuts inside from the right wing and sweeps the ball across to the onrushing Cufre on the far side.
The left wing-back drives forward to the edge of the box but his strike is blocked by the Red Bull defenders.
Best piece of play so far. Rodriguez could be a difference maker in this tight game.
Finally a bit of space opens up on the flank for NYC. The ball is worked forward but it bounces off the right boot of Ledesma and the move breaks down.
NYC have struggled to get their wide players into the game so far, being forced instead to play into the feet of their front three. When it works it's effective, but it does seem to be hampering their usual build-up play.
Twenty minutes gone, still 0-0 in New York.
Red Bulls are furious as a free kick is awarded to Parks, who went down rather softly on the edge of his own box.
Their high-intensity ethos seems to be getting some joy against NYC but the referee's whistle denied them a dangerous opening there.
Carlos Coronel has to be quick off his line to clear the danger for Red Bulls. The Brazilian goalkeeper picks up a loose ball and works it out wide to Tolkin.
Algerian forward Bakrar has looked good so far, holding the ball up well when NYC can find his feet.
Gray delivers from the right for NYC but his low cross is cleared. The ball is worked out to the left and Cufre puts the ball back into the box.
You wonder if the acquisition of Bakrar will allow NYC to be a little more direct now, putting balls into the box for a proper striker.
Ten minutes in and there's been few surprises so far.
NYCFC have dominated the ball and look confident in possession, building their way up the pitch. But it has been the Red Bulls who have looked the more dangerous, pouncing on the occasional loose ball with real tenacity.
An entertaining start to the Leagues Cup Round of 32 fixture.
NYCFC are committed to their passing style and are beginning to dominate the ball. Red Bulls, however, are pressing high and are managing to upset the visitors' passing at times.
There's a brief stoppage after an NYC defender goes down with a knock.
No let up in the noise inside the Red Bull Arena, however. The home support are making the most of their home field advantage and are creating quite the atmosphere early on.
A lovely touch from Bakrar finds the onrushing Rodriguez in space in the middle of the RB half.
The breakaway came to nothing but it was a nice glimpse of how the City frontline can combine when given the chance.
NYCFC have their first spell of steady possession. Sands, returned to the starting XI after recovering from an injury, is looking to dictate the play for the visitors.

Atmosphere building in New York
We're close to kick-off in the 26th Hudson River derby and the atmosphere is starting to build in the Big Apple. Neither side has had much to cheer about in MLS this season but cup competitions can often offer respite from the league campaign.
The Red Bulls' fans are certainly getting into the spirit and we can expect a good atmosphere for tonight's game.
One to watch: Dante Vanzeir
New York Red Bulls have really struggled for goals this year and only Toronto FC have conceded more goals than them in the East. Their one goal threat comes in the form of forward Dante Vanzeir, who has been in good form in the Leagues Cup recently.
He scored twice in the 2-1 victory over Atletico de San Luis in the group stage, taking his tally to the season to five. If the Red Bulls are to progress in this competition, it will likely be because of Vanzeir's goals.
The players are out on the pitch at the Red Bull Arena, warming up for tonight's game. The stadium is starting to fill up for what is expected to be a thrilling game tonight.
Both sides have underperformed in the league this season and they are both stranded on 26 points, currently out of the playoff spots. They will be looking to kickstart their season tonight.

The knockout stages of the Leagues Cup got underway last night with Inter Miami and Lionel Messi cruising to a win over Orlando City in the Florida derby.
The Round of 32 will see 20 MLS sides and 12 Liga MX clubs face off for a chance to be crowned champions of the Concacaf region’s “newest” competition. This new-look tournament has brought some interesting changes, including added excitement from penalty shootouts.
If you were paying close attention during the group stages you’ll have noticed that matches that were tied at the end of 90 minutes were effectively decided by a penalty shootout.
