Mexico roster controversy erupts as federation backtracks on World Cup plan
Mexico changes course on early call-ups after surprise omissions, opening the door to new names ahead of World Cup decisions.

A major controversy is swirling around the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and the national team over how it is handling preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
Confusion over Liga MX call-ups
Months ago, the plan was clear. Players selected by head coach Javier Aguirre would skip the Liga MX playoffs in order to join an early training camp. In exchange, those released by their clubs for this “microcycle” would effectively secure a spot on the final World Cup roster.
That approach immediately raised eyebrows across Mexican soccer. And in recent days, the noise only grew louder after the release of a preliminary squad list that notably excluded players like Charly Rodríguez and Marcel Ruiz, both of whom had recently been considered near locks.
Now, the federation appears to be backing off its original stance.
‘Final’ Mexico roster not set in stone
Speaking to El Heraldo, national teams director Duilio Davino made it clear the situation remains fluid.
“We’re not closing the door on anything,” Davino said. “The goal is to take the best possible team to the World Cup. There’s still plenty of time before the final list, which is due June 1.”
He also outlined the next key deadline in the process.
“On May 11, we have to submit a preliminary list to FIFA of up to 55 players. From that group, Javier Aguirre will ultimately select the squad that represents Mexico.”
Still, Davino acknowledged that players currently involved in the early camp may hold an advantage.
“Of course, these 20 players, by being here with us, working early with Aguirre and playing in these friendlies, are a step ahead of the rest.”
“THE NATIONAL TEAM IS ABOVE ANY CLUB”.

Mexico’s World Cup warm-up games
For now, this group, which also includes several sparring players, is preparing for a series of warm-up matches as Mexico builds toward the World Cup.
El Tri is scheduled to face Ghana on May 22, Australia on May 29, and Serbia on June 4, all leading up to the June 11 opening game against South Africa.
With the federation softening its stance and key names left off the initial list, the battle for roster spots is wide open, and the debate around Mexico’s World Cup planning is far from over.
