Official: Mourinho returns to Real Madrid

More than a decade after the end of his first tenure as Real Madrid boss, Los Blancos have confirmed José Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu bench.

Thirteen years have passed. In that time, there have been six Champions League titles, four LaLiga crowns, and two Copa del Rey trophies. Humanity has looped the moon, the world has endured a pandemic, and the Bernabéu has undergone a transformation. Seven head coaches have come and gone, along with dozens of players—Bale, Kroos, Hazard; Zidane, Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso. There’s even been a change of pope.

And yet, here comes another puff of white smoke: José Mourinho is back at Real Madrid. It’s official now - a done deal. A new sentence after what felt like a period. The man of the Copa del Rey in Mestalla, of three Champions League semifinals. The coach who, in Florentino Pérez’s words, “restored competitiveness” to the club. The one with the finger in Tito Vilanova’s eye, the architect of the famous “why?” press conference. A figure so different he never fails to leave an impression. Mou. He left in 2013; he returns in 2026. The ‘Special One’ is back.

Madrid moves for Mou after Klopp KO

Only time will tell whether, as some suggest, he arrives in a “calmer” phase of his career. DNA is DNA. And this was an operation long in the making. When the club decided not to continue with Álvaro Arbeloa - back in the first half of April, as the project began to unravel - two names quickly rose to the top of the shortlist: Jürgen Klopp and Mourinho. The two leading candidates; the two most coveted.

But the race didn’t last long. Klopp made it clear he was waiting on the German national team job. He shut the door, and Madrid knocked - firmly - on that of a familiar face. Mourinho already knew of Real Madrid’s interest in the final weeks of the LaLiga season. He knew perfectly well, even as he played it like a poker hand. He denied everything, despite the deal already being agreed.

It was a classic Mourinho move - controlling the narrative on his own terms. And, at the same time, keeping the Benfica door slightly ajar in case the upcoming Real Madrid presidential elections took an unexpected turn. But the reality was unmistakable.

Once the LaLiga season wrapped, the deal moved toward its signature phase. And now, it is official. Mourinho will be Real Madrid’s head coach for the next three seasons, through June 2029.

Price tag: €15m

The process hit turbulence along the way. Mourinho had been set to be announced on May 25, immediately after the season ended. But then came the presidential election and Enrique Riquelme’s candidacy. Everything went on hold - frozen in a tense calm that finally broke on June 3, when it became clear that if Pérez won, Mourinho would be the head coach. And so it has come to pass.

Had things moved quicker, Madrid could have activated a clause to sign him for €8 million. But with the delay, the club had to trigger his full release clause: €15 million. That’s the final cost. Mourinho is now the most expensive coach in Real Madrid history.

Coaching staff

He arrives with his trusted inner circle - the group that has been at the core of his staff since Fenerbahçe in 2025: João Tralhão (assistant), Pedro Machado (assistant), and António Dias (fitness coach). Also joining him are Roberto Merella (an analyst he’s worked with since Roma in 2022) and Nuno Santos (goalkeeping coach from his stints at Tottenham, Roma, and Benfica).

One seat remains open. The club is exploring the addition of an in-house assistant - someone to fill a role similar to that once held by Aitor Karanka. As for methodology, Mourinho runs a flat structure within his staff: no rigid hierarchy among assistants, all operating on the same level - though, of course, beneath him.

At a glance - Mourinho’s coaching team:

  • Assistant: João Tralhão
  • Assistant: Pedro Machado
  • In-house assistant: TBD
  • Fitness coach: António Dias
  • Analyst: Roberto Merella
  • Goalkeeping coach: Nuno Santos
