Portugal will be out to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2006 when they face Switzerland in the round of 16 on Tuesday, while the Swiss are bidding to end an even longer wait for a last-eight place.

Switzerland haven’t made it to the World Cup quarter-finals since they hosted the tournament in 1954.

This will be Portugal and Switzerland’s third meeting in the space of six months. The countries met twice in June in the UEFA Nations League, earning one victory each. The Portuguese were 4-0 winners in Lisbon, before losing 1-0 in Lancy a week later.

The winner of the tie at Lusail Stadium will meet either Morocco or Spain in the quarter-finals.

Portugal vs Switzerland: match odds

The bookmakers expect Portugal to prevail, with US betting houses pricing a win for the Seleçao at around -115 to -120. A Swiss victory is back at between +340 and +380, and a draw is valued at +235 to +250.

For betting purposes, a knockout tie that finishes level after 90 minutes tends to be counted as a draw.

Portugal vs Switzerland: prediction

A look at Portugal and Switzerland’s World Cup knockout-stage form is unlikely to inspire confidence in either side’s prospects of success on Tuesday, to be honest.

Portugal last won a single-elimination match at the tournament when they beat England on penalties in the 2006 quarter-finals. Since then, they have lost four World Cup knockout ties in a row, most recently going down 2-1 to Uruguay in the last 16 at Russia 2018.

As for Switzerland, you can pretty much hang your hat on them getting out of their group these days - they’re in the last 16 for the fourth time in the past five World Cups - but they haven’t won a knockout game at the finals since 1938.

Portugal and Switzerland were both involved in 3-2 thrillers in the group stage, but the latter’s recent results in sudden-death situations suggests we’ll see few goals at Lusail Stadium - and very possibly a match that goes the distance. Of the Swiss’ six major-tournament knockout ties this century, only one has produced more than two goals. What’s more, five have gone to extra time, and four have been settled from the spot.

Prediction: Portugal 1-1 Switzerland (Portugal win on penalties)
