Update:

A total of 75% of Premier League fans are opposed to the use of VAR, according to a survey conducted by the UK’s leading supporters’ group, the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA). The study gathered responses from nearly 8,000 fans across all 20 clubs in the league.

An overwhelming 90% of respondents said the introduction of the technology has not improved the matchday experience, while 91% believe VAR has damaged goal celebrations.

The dissatisfaction extends beyond stadiums. A further 94% said VAR has not made watching soccer on television more enjoyable, while 74% rejected the idea that refereeing standards have improved. Meanwhile, 86% expressed concern over upcoming changes – set to take effect June 1 – that would expand VAR’s scope to include corner kicks and yellow cards.

“These results show that fans want VAR removed,” said Thomas Concannin, one of the study’s organizers, speaking to the BBC. “We’ve lived with VAR long enough to understand the negative impact it’s had on the sport. People are frustrated by the delays, the accuracy, and how it has stripped away spontaneity. It takes away what football should be – its special moments.”

Back in 2024, Wolverhampton Wanderers pushed for a vote to scrap VAR in the Premier League. However, 19 of the 20 clubs opposed the proposal, though the league pledged to review protocols and improve the overall experience. Any future vote to eliminate VAR would require the backing of at least 14 clubs.

According to data from the Premier League’s independent panel reviewing controversial decisions, accuracy levels have reached 96–97% since VAR’s introduction. At the same time, delays caused by the system have dropped by 25% over the past two seasons.

“We recognize the importance of minimizing VAR’s impact on the fan experience,” the Premier League said in response to the survey. “As part of our ongoing dialogue with supporters, our research indicates that fans support VAR, but improvements are being introduced.”
