PSG fume as Real Madrid move swiftly to dazzle Diomande

Respect for rival teams does not mean a club refrains from pursuing its own interests, especially when it comes to players under contract elsewhere. The clearest example is what has unfolded in the Yan Diomande deal, much like the situations involving Real Madrid’s capture of Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva during the World Cup. Swift, targeted moves carried out with complete discretion, and in each case the player’s preference proved decisive.

In Paris, there is clear disappointment that Diomande has chosen Madrid. PSG head coach Luis Enrique had already begun envisioning how the Ivory Coast international would fit into his squad, particularly as uncertainty continues to surround Bradley Barcola’s contract situation at Parc des Princes. This was, quite simply, a straight fight between two clubs starting from equal footing, and Madrid came out on top. Nothing more, nothing less.

Diamonde’s Real decision

PSG has pointed to what it describes as excessive financial demands as the reason for withdrawing from the race, insisting the numbers no longer aligned with either common sense or the club’s financial model. In reality, however, the decisive factor was the player’s choice. Money was not the primary reason Diomande said yes to Madrid, regardless of attempts to frame the story differently. Negotiations moved at lightning speed for a player who spent the 2024-25 season in Spain at Leganés, but truly broke out last year in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, following a development path similar to that of players such as Joško Gvardiol, Benjamin Šeško and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The transfer is expected to be completed for around $135 million, with all key elements of the agreement already in place. That figure is very similar to what PSG was prepared to offer. The Parisian club has pointed fingers at the player’s representatives, but the reality is far simpler. Madrid identified its target, senior executives traveled to advance discussions, the coaching staff made direct contact, and face-to-face meetings secured the player’s commitment, laying the groundwork for an agreement with the German club.

There were negotiations between PSG and the player, and at times the two sides appeared close to finding common ground. What never existed, however, was a binding agreement. Attention has inevitably turned toward Roc Nation, the agency representing the player, but the truth is that Madrid’s flexibility and powers of persuasion ultimately tipped the scales in its favor. That is not to say the financial package was insignificant. Far from it. Just a week ago, the transfer looked virtually impossible; seven days later, it could be officially announced at any moment.

PSG eyeing Real-linked Rodri

Meanwhile, as is the case every summer, PSG has already shifted its attention elsewhere in pursuit of its transfer objectives, with Manchester City’s Rodri emerging as a potential target. The World Cup winner has been linked with Madrid for months, although those reports have consistently been downplayed from within Valdebebas. Now comes the moment when we find out Los Blancos’ true intentions over the Spanish midfielder’s future. And City’s, too, after the Premier League club stated that it expects Rodri to be part of its squad at the start of the new season.
