PSG president Nasser Al Khelaïfi attacks the Super League and addresses Saudi Arabia’s rise in football
The PSG President spoke about the state of the Super League as well as mentioning the meteoric rise to prominence that Saudi Arabian football has seen.
Nasser Al Khelaïfi was re-elected president of the ECA (European Clubs Association) during the General Assembly held in Berlin and later appeared in front of the media in order to address questions from the journalists, including those related to Madrid’s, Barça’s and Juventus’ exile from the ECA since the creation and ultimately failed attempt at bringing together the European Super League.
“I call it the No Super League”, he said, “we don’t care what they do. Nobody wants them. They are outside. “Before there were three teams, now there are two...” he said in clear reference to Madridistas and culés.
Al Khelaïfi sees no danger in Saudi rise in football
Al Khelaïfi also spoke publicly for the first time about the rise of Saudi Arabian football and whether it may pose a threat to European football: “I don’t think there is any danger. We focus on Europe and our clubs. We have the best and most important competitions, the best players. It is not my place to judge what happens outside Europe. “We focus on ourselves,” he said, pouring cold water on the mass exile seen over the summer.
The day before, during his speech to the assembly, Al Khelaïfi brought up a very specific memory regarding the Super League: “I will never forget all the departures from the ECA Board WhatsApp group on Sunday, April 18, 2021. In fact, I thought that my phone had been hacked, and it wouldn’t be the first time. However, I will always remember how we stood firm as an institution and the clubs that returned, some of which are contributing more than ever to the ECA,” he finished.
