Pumas, América and Chivas all in need of home win in Clausura 2023

Pumas haven’t won at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario for over two months. América and Chivas are doing better than Los Felinos, but also have less than perfect home form.

Although Club América and Chivas Guadalajara are enjoying much better Clausura 2023 campaigns than Pumas, all three Mexican giants need to get back to winning ways on home turf. Pumas haven’t won at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in 76 days, while América were last victorious at home more than 40 days ago, and Chivas’ most recent three points at the Estadio Akron came over 30 days ago.

Overall, it’s fair to say that the trio have been less than dependable in front of their own fans in the Clausura 2023 - and that’s the kind of characteristic that can prove fatal to a team’s chances in the postseason playoffs.

In the current tournament, the side that has gone the longest without a home win is Atlas, who last triumphed at the Estadio Jalisco 85 days ago. They’re followed by Pumas, Pachuca (68), Tigres and Juárez (55), Necaxa (51), América (47), Tijuana (40), Mazatlán (35), Guadalajara (34), Puebla (28), Santos Laguna (26), Cruz Azul (20), Club León (19), Monterrey (six), and Toluca, Atlético San Luis and Querétaro (five).

Pumas home form contributes to lowly position

Pumas haven’t won at home since matchday three, when they beat León 4-1. Since then, they’ve accumulated slip-up after slip-up at the Olímpico Universitario: a 2-1 defeat to Chivas on matchday eight, a 4-2 reverse to Puebla on matchday 10, a 2-0 loss to Pachuca on matchday 12, and a 2-2 draw with Atlas on matchday five.

Overall, Pumas’ home record of two wins, one draw and three defeats in the Clausura 2023 has been a key factor in Los Felinos’ poor tournament. The seven-time Mexican champions lie 17th in the regular-season standings, outside of the postseason spots.

América on two-game home winless run

Meanwhile, América’s last win at the Estadio Azteca came on matchday eight, when Fernando Ortiz’s side defeated Atlético San Luis 2-1. In the two home games they’ve played since then, Las Águilas have been dealt a 3-0 thumping by Pachuca on matchday 10 and been held to a 2-2 draw by León on matchday 13.

América do actually have a positive record at the Azteca in the Clausura 2023 - three wins, three draws and only one defeat - but they have suffered a clear wobble at home in recent times.

Only one home win for Chivas

Chivas’ most recent win at the Estadio Akron was a 2-0 victory over Santos Laguna on matchday 10. That preceded a 4-2 defeat to América on matchday 12. Guadalajara have been particularly weak at home in the Clausura 2023, as Veljko Paunovic’s men have posted two defeats, two draws and only one win in five games.
