Pumas will travel to face Monterrey with hopes of getting their Apertura 2025 campaign back on track. But history isn’t on their side - especially when it comes to playing at Estadio BBVA, where the odds have consistently favored the home team.
The Mexico City club enters Saturday’s matchup in Nuevo León riding a four-game winless streak. With just 13 points to their name, they currently sit in 10th place in the overall standings.
Adding to the pressure are growing concerns over the team’s performance and mounting criticism aimed at head coach Efraín Juárez - not only for his tactical decisions but also for his behavior on the sidelines, which has already led to multiple ejections this season.
When did Pumas last get a Rayados road win?
While the clash against Monterrey presents an opportunity to shift momentum, the challenge is steep. Rayados are in third place with 26 points and have dominated this rivalry in recent years.
Pumas haven’t beaten Monterrey in over three years. In their last eight meetings, the capital side has suffered six losses and managed just two draws. Their most recent victory came back in April 2022, a 2-0 win at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
That win, however, came on home turf. When it comes to playing at Monterrey’s Estadio BBVA - nicknamed the “Steel Giant” - Pumas have never managed to walk away with a win. Since the stadium opened in 2015, the two sides have met there 12 times in regular season and postseason play. The results? Eleven wins for Rayados and a single draw.
Juárez’s squad faces an uphill battle heading into this pivotal Apertura 2025 fixture. With the regular season winding down, Pumas still have a shot at reaching the final phase - but they’ll need to overcome both their recent form and a daunting historical record to keep those hopes alive.
