Following Antonio Mohamed’s appointment as Pumas boss, the Liga MX club are planning to make several changes to their squad as they bid to become competitive again in the Apertura 2023 tournament.

According to a report in Mexico, one man who is on the seven-time Mexican champions’ wish list is Necaxa goalkeeper Hugo González.

Mohamed out to overhaul Pumas squad

Per the media outlet W Deportes, Mohamed’s assessment of his squad after overseeing his opening Pumas training sessions is that the first-team group needs a shake-up if Los Felinos are to challenge.

The head coach and club chiefs are also keen to reduce the number of foreigners in the squad, so their priority is to bring in Mexicans.

W Deportes says that one of the players Mohamed has asked Pumas to sign is González, who the Argentine knows well from his stints as head coach at Monterrey and Club América.

Pumas boss eyeing González reunion

Mohamed has always had a lot of confidence in the América youth product; indeed, he gave the keeper his first opportunities in the Mexican top flight at Las Águilas. The 53-year-old then took González to Monterrey, installing him as starting keeper at a club he went on to coach to a Liga MX title and two Copas MX.

The plan at Pumas would be for their current number one, Sebastián Sosa, to stay on at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario and compete with González.

Sosa has just been ruled out of the rest of the Clausura 2023 tournament with a foot injury, so understudy Julio González is set to be Pumas’ goalkeeper for the remainder of the campaign.

Gudiño also an option for Pumas

Another keeper that Pumas are keeping tabs on is Hugo González’s experienced Necaxa club-mate Raúl Gudiño, who previously played for Chivas Guadalajara.
