Quincy Promes stabbing conviction: Former Dutch international given 18-month jail sentence for assaulting cousin
The former Ajax star is also facing drug trafficking charges for allegedly importing 1,300kg of cocaine.
Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of stabbing his cousin at a family party.
The incident occurred in July 2020 when the 31-year-old footballer assaulted his cousin. Promes had been tipped to feature for the Netherlands in the 2022 World Cup, until Dutch prosecutors announced in November 2021 that he would face a criminal trial.
What has Quincy Promes been found guilty of?
Promes was playing for Ajax, the Netherlands’ most successful team, at the time of the incident after returning to the country after a spell with Spanish side Ajax. He initially impressed at the Amsterdam Arena but was off-loaded to Russian side Spartak Moscow in February 2021.
Still playing in Russia, Promes was not present in Dutch court for the trial. He denies the charges but a court in the Netherlands ruled that there was enough evidence to find him guilty of assault.
He avoided charges of attempted murder and manslaughter. His legal team are now expected to appeal the conviction but it is unclear if he will return to the country. He is still under contract with Spartak Moscow.
What is the Quincy Promes drugs charge?
The assault is far from the only legal trouble currently facing the Dutch international. Last month he was charged by Dutch prosecutors for his alleged involvement in drugs trafficking.
The 31-year-old forward is accused of aiding a group who attempted to smuggle more than 1.3 metric tonnes of cocaine through Antwerp port and into the Netherlands or Belgium. The 1,362kg shipment was uncovered after the Dutch prosecution service conducted a drug trafficking investigation.
He is scheduled to appear in court on drugs-related charges on 11 August 2023, but it seems unlikely that he will attend.
