It’s official. After a summer of flirting with a number of possible suitors, including Liga MX side Club América and MLS as a whole, former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has completed his return to Sevilla. And the 37-year-old’s first act after re-signing was to apologise to fans of the club he left for Los Blancos when he was 19 in 2005.

Ramos apologetic on Sevilla return

“Today is a very special and exciting day for me. I’m finally back home and I’m looking forward to pulling the Sevilla shirt on again and playing for the badge again. It’s been 18 years since I left and I think I’ve made mistakes. I want to take this opportunity to apologise for them in person and to say sorry to any Sevilla fan who has been offended by things I might have done or gestures I might have made at any point. I think we are all in the same boat and we are all part of the same family”.

Ex-PSG defender “owed” move to his grandfather

Building bridges was very much the theme of Ramos’ first public appearance of his second spell as a Sevilla player, which was broadcast on the club’s social media channels. “I am the same as any other player, I’m here to do my bit and row in the same direction as everyone else. I can’t wait to see all of you again. Coming back wasn’t just something I owed to myself but also to my family, to my grandfather, who made me become a Sevilla fan when I was young, to my father. It didn’t make sense to go anywhere else rather than coming home. I hope to see you soon, I’m here to give my all and try to achieve our goals for the season”.

Real Madrid’s Ramos in altercations with Sevilla support

A new chapter begins in Ramos’ somewhat stormy relationship with the Sevilla support, who have been unhappy with his behaviour in previous matches between their club and Real Madrid. This summer, speculation has been rife about a possible return for the centre-back to Estadio Sánchez Pizjuán, which was denied on several occasions by club bosses. However, Ramos is officially back where it all started, ready to win over those doubters and make up for lost time.
