Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid: As it happened
Real Sociedad reiterated their top four credentials with an impressive win over Real Madrid on Tuesday.
La Real started off strongly, led by the attacking duo of Alexander Sorloth and Take Kubo. The hosts failed to make the most of some presentable chances in the first half but made Madrid pay soon after the break when Kubo broke the deadlock.
The former Real Madrid man pounced on a loose ball in the Madrid defence and prodded the ball past Thibaut Courtois in goal.
Before Real Madrid had managed to get a foothold in the game Dani Carvajal was dismissed for a second booking on the hour mark.
With an extra man for the remaining 30 minutes Real Sociedad were by far the better side and Berrenetxea put the game to bed with five minutes to play.
An impressive performance from La Real sees them open up an eight-point lead over Villarreal in fifth. Champions League qualification beckons for Imanol's side.
Scenes in San Sebastian!
After a top performance from their side, Real Sociedad fans have stuck around to celebrate with the players this evening. There has been a brilliant atmosphere all night and there's no sign of the celebrations stopping anytime soon.
Real Sociedad are now closing in on Champions League qualification and truly outplayed Real Madrid at Reale Arena tonight.
David Silva, by numbers
The Real Sociedad midfielder has been awarded the Man of the Match after lighting up Reale Arena this evening. The 37-year-old was involved in all of La Real's play and it was his pass that set up the crucial second goal for Ander Barrenetxea.
A virtuoso performance from Silva.
Barcelona close in on La Liga title
This win was one to savour for everyone associated with Real Sociedad, but their victory over Real Madrid has wider repercussions for the Spanish league.
Within moments of the final whistle in San Sebastian, Barcelona's twitter account took the opportunity to celebrate a widening of their gap at the top of the league.
With this 14-point lead, Barcelona can win La Liga by beating local rivals Espanyol this weekend.
La Real celebrate a big win
What a night in Reale Arena. Real Sociedad move eight points clear of fifth-placed Villarreal and Imanol's side must be feeling very confident of securing Champions LEague football next season.
FULL TIME
That's that, a famous win for a Real Sociedad side who looked by far the better team across the 90 minutes.
Two well-taken goals for La Real reiterates their Champions League push.
CHANCE! Real Madrid
Chaos in the Sociedad box!
A wide ball is clipped in by Dani Ceballos and dropped by Sociedad keeper Alex Remino. It bobbles around the six yard box but Real Madrid can't get a decisive touch. It's prodded out for a corner but Real Sociedad clear easily.
Five minutes of additional time
Not long to go now and the Real Sociedad fans are savouring every single moment of it.
Real Sociedad substitution
Asier Illarremendi comes on to replace David Silva.
Real Sociedad have looked like a brilliantly organised team throughout this match, but special mention should be given to David Silva. The 37-year-old has been one of the best players on the pitch tonight and is withdrawn to a rapturous reception from the home support.
GOOOOAAAALLL! REAL SOCIEDAD
The hosts have continued to push with the man advantage and they get a well-deserved second with five minutes remaining.
David Silva picked up the ball in the middle and spreads the ball wide to Ander Barrenetxea, who had stayed wide on the left. He drove inside and fired an early shot low past Courtois at the near post.
Is that it, or can Madrid muster a late comeback?
Real Madrid substitution
21-year-old midfielder Sergio Arribas is on for the final minutes, replacing Marco Asensio.
Save! Courtois!
After a lot of organisation Real Sociedad get a shot on target through Ander Barrenetxea but Thibaut Courtois saves fairly comfortably down to his left.
Into the final ten minutes of normal time here.
Free kick! Real Sociedad
Dani Ceballos is penalised for a foul on Carlos Fernandez right on the edge of the Madrid box. Great chance for a strike on goal here; David Silva and Mikel Oyarbazal are standing over it....
Real Sociedad substitutions
Take Kubo and Alexander Sorloth are replaced by Carlos Fernandez and Ander Barrenetxea for the final twenty minutes.
Brilliant performances from both of the departing players.
Carlo's booked!
You know things aren't quite going as planned when the coolest man in football is losing his temper. Carlo Ancelotti receives a booking for his reaction to the referee's decision not to give a foul for a challenge on Rodrygo.
After that flurry of activity Real Madrid are looking to cool the temperature of the game. Lucas Vasquez has slotted in a right back in place of Carvajal but the duo of Kubo and Sorloth are causing the visitors real problems.
The home crowd is loud and urging their team forward at every opportunity. La Real seem to be sensing a vulnerability in the Madrid backline here and are looking to make the man advantage count.
Real Sociedad substitutions
Zubeldia and Gorosabel make way for the hosts, replaced by Pacheco and Elustondo.
Still 25 minutes remaining, still all to play for at Reale Arena.
Real Madrid substitutions
Toni Kroos is replaced by Lucas Vasquez.
Lucas will slot in at right back.
Red! Carvajal
The Real Madrid right back is off! A late tackle on Aihen Muñoz who is still down.
Carvajal was looking very wound up a few minutes ago and that seems to have bubbled over for Madrid here. A few subs incoming now...
That's more like it from Madrid!
Rodrygo skips past two challenges and charges into the Real Sociedad box. He's tracked all the way, however, by Zubeldia and the Spanish defender makes a good block to force him wide.
The corner is cleared.
Real Madrid substitution
Alvaro Rodriguez replaces Mariano Diaz up top for Los Blancos.
Chance! Kroos
One man who always keeps his head is Toni Kroos. The ill-cool German goes close from distance. His delicately curved effort from the edge of the box forces a low save from Alex Remiro. Looks like a slight deflection helped to take the sting out of the shot.
Yellow card for Carvajal
And if he's not careful, it could be more. The Madrid right-back is given a booking for a late foul but proceeds to protest his case to the referee.
Madrid need to keep their heads here.
Kubo's back up and he's on the move again, darting off the right flank and towards the Madrid box. He looks really up for this now and Nacho is struggling to contain the pacey youngster.
Kubo's down
Just minutes after he opened the scoring Take Kubo receives a whack in the face from Mariano Diaz as they duel for a high ball.
While the goalscoring receives treatment, a chance to look back on his goal. Courtois opted to play short to Eder Militao, who was immediately put under pressure by Sorloth.
Militao looked to play the ball back inside to his goalkeeper but only succeeded in finding Kubo free in the box. The Japanese former Madrid player gleefully accepted the gift and slotted coolly past Courtois.
GOOOOOOAAAL! Real Sociedad
That didn't take long!
What a start to the second half, former Madrid player Take Kubo is on hand to poke home after a misplaced pass from Militao.
1-0 Sociedad!
And we're off...
Second half underway in San Sebastian. Can Real Sociedad build on a strong first half display or will Real Madrid get back into it this half?
No change in personnel at the break, but Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping for a very different performance from his side in the second 45 minutes.
How has Mariano Diaz played?
He was the surprise inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI for tonight, but Mariano Diaz has done little to justify his selection.
The Dominican international has had just eight touches in the first half and done nothing of note with any of them. Stepping into Karim Benzema's shoes is never an easy task but Ancelotti needs more from the central forward than Mariano has shown tonight.
They haven't quite found the breakthrough yet but that was a very impressive opening 45 from Real Sociedad. Their high-pressing style has made the Madrid backline look vulnerable on multiple occasions and preventing them from playing out comfortably.
Imanol's side had a very good shout for a penalty denied after Oyarbazal appeared to have been clipped in the box and David Silva squandered the best chance of the half with a tame side-footed effort.
Will Real Sociedad be able to build on that fine performance in the second half, or will they be made to rue their wastefulness?
Peeeeeep...
And that's the break. Scores still even but Real Sociedad will be by far the happier of the two sides after 45 minutes in San Sebastian.
Chance! Sorloth
Real Sociedad win the ball high and David Silva floats in a delicate cross towards Alexander Sorloth in the middle. Just as he's about to connect with the ball Antonio Rudiger flies in to divert the cross wide.
Sorloth is now down after sustaining a knock in the process. Three minutes' added time signalled.
Chance! Real Madrid
Finally a bit of attacking intent from Los Blanco. Asensio surges forward through the midfield and finds Rodrygo in space on the right. The Brazilian jinks inside and slides the ball to Tchouameni.
The Frenchman's shot is blocked by a Real Sociedad defender. Ancelotti will be happy to see something from his side.
Brilliant play from Real Sociedad gets them sweeping forward once again. Sorloth holds up the ball brilliantly and some neat interplay between Silva and Merino gets Munoz on the ball in space on the left flank.
Nothing comes of the play but it's a reminder that Real Sociedad are the more comfortable of the two sides so far. Ten to go until the break.
Real Sociedad will definitely be the happier of the two sides after the opening half an hour in San Sebastian. The hosts have looked the most dangerous team on the break and really should have taken the lead already.
Can La Real make the breakthrough before the half?
Chance! Rodrygo
Los Blancos have been pinned back for much of the last ten minutes but there was an opening there. Rodrygo broke free into the Sociedad half and skipped past Zubimendi.
The Brazilian reached the edge of the box and fired at goal, but Alex Remiro was equal to it.
PENALTY?! No
Oyarzabal goes down in the box and there are screams of appeal from the home crowd. It looked like a very good shout for a foul but the referee waves away protestations.
Madrid actually break and win a free kick on the edge of the hosts' box, but it skips wide of the far post.
Still 0-0, Sociedad really could be ahead now.
Real Madrid trying to take the sting out of the game with a spell of possession now. However without either Karim Benzema or Vinicius Junior to act as an out-ball Los Blancos look a little short on invention so far.
CHANCE! Silva
How have they not scored? Brilliant work from Sorloth on the right to breeze past Rudiger. Sorloth finds David SIlva in space in the box but his side-footed efforted is repelled by Courtois.
The crowd is pumped and Real Sociedad are on top! Can they make the most of this good spell?
CHANCE! Zubimendi
What a chance for the hosts! A whipped corner kick from Kubo is flicked on by Sorloth and flies across the face of goal. Zubimendi connects at the back post from just two yards out but can only prod the ball onto the crossbar!
Should be 1-0!
Chance! Sorloth
After Real Madrid dominated the opening ten minutes the hosts are starting to get a foothold in the game. Some neat work from La Real found Kubo in space on the right and a square ball finds Alexander Sorloth in space in the box.
His effort is deflected wide by a Madrid defender and the visitors clear the resultant corner.
Close! Militao
Eder Militao connects with a Real Madrid corner and flicks a glancing head goalward. The ball's dipping just under the Sociedad crossbar but Remiro makes a flying save to his left.
Close! Tchouameni
The Frenchman appears to have a bit of a license to roam ahead of Toni Kroos and he fires in a strong effort from the edge of the box. Alex Remiro ges down well to smother the shot.
Bit of a sticky moment at the back for Antonio Rudiger there. The German defender received the ball from Toni Kroos but managed to get the ball stuck under his feet, nearly losing it to the onrushing Take Kubo.
Crisis averted and Militao rolls it back to Courtois.
And we're off!
We're underway in San Sebastian, Real Madrid take control in the early moments.
Here's tonight's starting XIs...
In case you missed it, here's how the two sides line up at Reale Arena for this La Liga clash.
What a spectacle in San Sebastian
We're set to kick off in just five minutes, but there's another type of show on offer at Reale Arena at the moment... With the lights off, a single figure dressed as Spider-Man is abseiling down onto the centre of the pitch.
He didn't look particularly athletic on the way down but he's managed some pretty impressive flips and tricks now that he's made it to the ground.
A confusing start to tonight's action.
The hosts are out at Reale Arena
Real Sociedad will look to solidify their place in the Champions League qualifying spot tonight against Real Madrid. There's 15 minutes to go until kick-off and Imanol Alguacil side are looking ready to pull off an upset tonight.
Thibaut Courtois between the sticks for Madrid
The Real Madrid goalkeeping coach is putting Thibaut Courtois through his paces ahead of tonight's game. The Belgian No. 1 was widely regarded as a key part of Madrid's success this year but we have seen a few injuries and a slight dip in form this campaign.
Can Barcelona win the league tonight?
Away from San Sebastian, FC Barcelona have beaten ten-man Osasuna 1-0 at Camp Nou to edge themselves even closer to the La Liga title. Since the turn of the year Xavi Hernandez's side have looked set to lift the trophy but they have not quite confirmed their title mathematically.
However a Real Madrid loss tonight could put Barca within one win of the title. If Carlo Ancelotti's men lose at Real Sociedad, Barcelona could win the league this weekend against local rivals Espanyol.
What a venue!
Real Sociedad host Real Madrid in La Liga today with both sides looking to sure up their spots in the Champion League qualification places. La Real currently sit in fourth place and know that they can close the gap on Atleti Madrid if they can beat their city rivals.
Little over half an hour until kick-off, not long until the players are out.
And here's the Real Sociedad starting XI...
Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil has gone for an attacking line-up for the visit of Real Madrid today, opting to pair Take Kubo and Alexander Sorloth up front.
Sorloth, on loan from RB Leipzig, has reached double figures in La Liga and hit 14 goals in all competitions. Former Madrid man Kubo will be eager to show his talents against his old club.
It's an exciting line-up from the hosts, little over an hour to go until kick-off now...
Will Take Kubo come back to haunt Madrid?
Japanese international Take Kubo has had an extensive career in Spanish football, despite still being just 21 years old. He moved from Kawasaki to Barcelona's La Masia academy at the age of 10, before moving back to his homeland to join FC Tokyo.
After a few successful seasons there he was brought back to Spain by Real Madrid, but failed to make an impact in the first team. After a number of loans he finally left Madrid on a permanent basis to sign for Real Sociedad, where he has proved himself one of the most exciting young attackers in Spain.
Real Madrid starting XI
Los Blancos have gone with Mariano Diaz up front in the absence of Karim Benzema. The Dominican international has made just 50 league appearances for the club since signing from Lyon in 2018 but has been handed a chance against Real Sociedad tonight.
What do you think of Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI?
Yesterday Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press ahead of the La Liga trip to Real Sociedad. Real Madrid's priorities are elsewhere with crucial Champions League games and a Copa Del Rey final coming up, but the Italian will be desperate to push Barcelona all the way in the league.
Here's what Don Carlo had to say ahead of the trip to San Sebastian...
Los Blancos are ready
There's little under two hours to go until kick off at the Reale Arena, San Sebastien for tonight's game. Here's a little look at the behind-the-scenes preparation for Real Madrid..
No Benzema for Real Madrid
Los Blancos' talisman Karim Benzema has been left out of the matchday squad to play Real Sociedad, leaving many to wonder how Carlo Ancelotti's men will line up.
The likes of Rodrygo or Dani Ceballos could be fielded in the false nine role, as could the unfavoured Eden Hazard.
With Barcelona now 11 points ahead in the table Real Madrid are clearly prioritising the cups and have crucial games in the Champions League and a Copa Del Rey final on the horizon.
After winning a sensational double in 2021/22, it's fair to say that this season has not quite lived up to the lofty pre-season expectations. Real Madrid have struggled to match the consistency of Barcelona in the league, due in part to some defensive frailties this campaign.
We take a look at the numbers behind Madrid's problems...
