Red Bull paid bargain price to buy New York Red Bulls back in 2006
Formerly the New York / New Jersey MetroStars, one of MLS' founding clubs was bought by the drinks manufacturer 18 years ago.
The New York Red Bulls are now just one game away from winning MLS Cup for the first time in the club’s 29-year history. One of MLS' founding teams, initially as the New York / New Jersey MetroStars, the Red Bulls have become a part of a global sporting behemoth.
Energy drink manufacturer Red Bull owns a vast network of soccer teams and other sporting institutions, as well as offering huge funding and sponsorship opportunities in the world of extreme sport.
But one of its earliest major sporting purchases was the acquisition of an MLS franchise. Back in 2006 Red Bull paid $30 million to buy the team. Earlier this year, Forbes valued the team at $560 million.
MLS proves a smart investment for Red Bull
That 2006 purchase has proved to be a very savvy piece of business for Red Bull. They have not only bought a stake in US soccer but in New York’s sports scene, where one of the world’s biggest sporting markets can see the New York Red Bulls in their Red Bull-sponsored jerseys play at the Red Bull Arena.
It’s a vast billboard that is increasingly visible in American life and also offers a root in to a rapidly growing market. As the MLS has continued to grow and its teams have become increasingly valuable, Red Bull’s asset has soared in value.
Speaking to The Athletic Misha Sher, European Sponsorship Association board member, explained: “They want to sell products but they don’t just see the opportunity in that... By owning the club, they have also increased the value of their asset because the industry has grown.”
In 2025 San Diego FC will become the 30th team in MLS, adding a fourth California franchise to the league. The ownership group from brought San Diego into the league paid a massive $500 million expansion fee to do so, by far the largest amount on record.
