Robert Taylor’s future: is he staying with Inter Miami?

Taylor has become an important part of the roster at the MLS club.

Beyond big names such as Leo Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets, Robert Taylor has emerged as one of the leaders of the Inter Miami squad. The Finnish winger is out of contract in December, but is now hoping for a contract extension with the MLS club.

At 29, Taylor has been in fine form for two seasons. Since Messi’s arrival, the Finn has exploited his goal-scoring ability more than ever. Last season he equalled his personal record with eight goals and nine assists, and this season he is aiming to surpass that.

Versatile player

In the Herons’ three games to date, the versatile player has already found the net twice. For head coach Tata Martino, Taylor is one of the ‘untouchables’ and after the departure of Yedlin, he could have another role in the team.

It hasn’t been all roses though. Taylor’s career hit rock bottom at Norwegian side SK Brann, where he was the star. In the country of Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard, the winger experienced possibly his worst moment as a professional. In the 2021 season, the Bergen club was playing for survival in the Norwegian top flight in the promotion/relegation playoffs against Jarv.

After a historic match that ended in a four-all draw, it was penalties that decided Taylor’s future in Norway. In the shoot-out he missed his penalty, condemning Brann to relegation. That penalty ruined a fantastic individual season in which he scored eight goals and dished out seven assists. In 2022 he signed for Inter Miami and the rest is history.
