Santiago Giménez, former Cruz Azul striker, has already made a name for himself in the European football scene with an impressive debut season. The 22-year-old has scored a total of 20 goals this year, which is equivalent to the number of goals that Javier Hernández and Luis García scored in their first experience outside Liga MX on the Old Continent.

Giménez catches Chicharito, chases Lozano

We’ve seen 12 of Giménez’s goals come in the Eredivisie, the Dutch top flight, which puts him on track to achieve another historical record for a Mexican player. He sits just five goals behind Hirving Lozano’s tally in his two full seasons with PSV Eindhoven in the league. Lozano scored 17 times in the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 Eredivisie seasons, but Giménez has only four games left to achieve this feat.

The Rotterdam-based team, Feyenoord, has already been eliminated from the UEFA Europa League and the domestic cup, leaving only the Eredivisie for them to focus on. With an eight-point advantage over PSV, confidence is high that they will win the title.

The remaining four opponents that Feyenoord will face are Excelsior (16th), Go Ahead Eagles (10th), Emmen (15th), and Vitesse (13th), all of whom should be easily dispatched of. However, Giménez will have to score more than one goal per game to equal Lozano’s record.

Top scorer 2022/23 in reach for Giménez

Giménez’s scoring streak in the final stretch of the campaign could also see him in contention for the Eredivisie scoring title. Currently, after 30 games played, Giménez is tied for third place in the scoring table with those 12 goals. He is only three behind the leaders, Sydney van Hooijdonk from Heerenveen, and Xavi Simons from PSV Eindhoven.

Giménez has scored in all three competitions he has played this season: 12 in the Eredivisie, five in the Europa League, and three in the KNVB Beker (the domestic cup). This makes it his most productive season of his career to date, and some of Europe’s elite clubs have been keeping a close eye on him.
