Make-or-break time for Saudi Arabia and Mexico who meet in Lusail to play out their final group game at 2022 Qatar. Both will be treading the fine line between success and failure as Group C reaches its conclusion later today. Both teams are still in with a chance of qualifying for the Round of 16 although that in itself no longer depends on them alone. One thing is guaranteed however - one of them will be waving goodbye to the tournament.

Saudi Arabia are third in Group C on three points, the same as Argentina in second, while Mexico are bottom with just one point. Only a win will do for Tata Martino’s side, and even then, they would also need Argentina to lose their match against Poland. If Argentina and Poland draw, there is still a chance that El Tri could snatch the runners-up slot, but only by beating the Saudis by four goals or more. Considering how Mexico have struggled to find the net so far (they are one of three teams who haven’t scored at all at Qatar 2022), you wouldn’t bet the family silver on that happening.

Their opponents will be just as keen to go through or at least give a good account if this turns out to be their swansong at Qatar 2022. All Saudi Arabia need is to win by a bigger margin than Argentina - by three goals. But their task will become harder with every goal Argentina score.

If Argentina beat Poland 0-1, Saudi Arabia would need to beat Mexico 3-0 - both teams would end with the same amount of points and goal difference, but Hervé Renard’s team would have the advantage in terms of goals scored (five to Argentina’s four) - plus they have the edge in the head-to-head figures.

If Messi and Co. are held by Poland, a win will be enough for Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia vs Mexico odds

Having advanced to the Round of 16 in its previous eight World Cup appearances, failing to make it past the group stage will be seen as a major disappointment for Mexico. El Tri go into the game as the bookies’ favourites with a Mexico victory priced at -162 (a $10 would return winnings of $16.17).

While there is an outside chance that a draw would suit Saudi Arabia, the betting houses can’t see it happening - they rate it at +270 for the game to end level on 90 minutes (a $10 bet wins $37).

A Saudi Arabia win appears to be even less likely, at least with the bookmakers. At the moment, it is priced at +340 (a $10 bet will pocket a tidy $44). That said, it’s worth remembering that just a few days ago, the odds for Hervé Renard’s team to beat Argentina were at +2300…
