Sergio Alberto Jáuregui, a former Bolivian soccer player, died last Sunday after being shot several times while playing a friendly match in the city of Cuautla, Morelos, according to local and national media in Mexico.

The act reportedly took place at 11:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, January 28, 2024. Sergio Jáuregui, 31, was playing a friendly match in the Eusebio Jáuregui neighborhood when he was intercepted by a man who shot him six times in a row before fleeing, reported Milenio.

Minutes after the attack, emergency services and ambulances arrived to deal with the violent incident in Morelos as the authorities immediately began the investigation to locate the shooter.

Atlético de San Luis Rey send a message to his family

After the news of the murder of the former Bolivian player broke, Atlético de San Luis Rey issued their condolences through a brief statement that was published on the social network Facebook: “We regret the death of our former player and Captain Sergio Jauregui who defended the colours of our team in the last Torneo de los Soles. We send our deepest condolences to his family”.

“We appreciate how you defended our badge and how you left everything on the field match after match, for that reason we will always carry you in our badge and heart. Thank you very much to the “Eternal Captain of Cuautla,” concluded the team’s message of affection and sadness.

Who was Sergio Jáuregui?

Sergio Jáuregui Landivar was born on March 13, 1985, in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia; he played as a defender. According to Milenio in Mexico, he was part of Arroceros de Cuautla, a team in which he turned into one of the main figures and idols in Morelos, positioning himself as the captain of the side.

In 2015 he retired as a professional player to start a new role in life playing in various “semi-professional” teams. He also sought to promote the sport by creating a school for children and young people, according to La Afición de Milenio.
