Spain vs USWNT – what’s at stake?

After losing by two goals to one at Wembley, the USWNT will be keen to get back on track against another nation that would, under normal circumstances, be hopeful of challenging at the 2023 World Cup.

However, circumstances around the Spanish women’s national team are anything but normal at the moment. Although Spain can boast some of the world’s top female soccer players, 15 members of the roster have declared themselves unhappy with head coash Jorge Vilda and made themselves unavailable for selection for the 1-1 draw against Sweden on Friday and the game against the United States. They claim that the “situation” surrounding the national team was having a “negative effect on their emotional state and health.” Spain will therefore line up with a severely weakened team in Pamplona, with six players from Barcelona not involved. The big question for them is whether the dispute will be resolved by the time the World Cup begins in July.

US soccer was rocked last week by a shocking report which revealed systemic abuse in the women’s game in the country and in the National Women’s Soccer League in particular. USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski was full of praise for his players after the game in England.

“Obviously, it’s been an extremely difficult week for everybody and I’m proud of the players for even being on the field and playing the game. For some of them who were in the environment to see and experience everything they went through, I applaud their bravery and I applaud their fearless mentality and relentlessness.

USWNT star Meghan Rapinoe talked about how she felt “emotionally exhausted” after learning of the report and there will be more important things on the American players’ minds at the moment than a friendly game, even though Rapinoe was full of admiration for the way her teammates “continued to do their job” at Wembley.

Spain v USWNT – team news

As mentioned, Spain are without 15 players who have made themselves unavailable for the time being, many of whom would be regular starters, including Barcelona quintet Patri Guijarro, Aitana Bonmatí, Mapi León, Mariona Caldentey and Sandra Paños. Alexia Putellas, winner of the Women’s Ballon d’Or in 2021, remains on the sidelines because of an ACL tear.

USWNT star striker Alex Morgan hasn’t travelled to Europe for the two friendly matches because of a minor knee injury. Carson Pickett has been added to the roster after fellow defender Emily Fox was forced off with concussion in England. Alyssa Thompson made her national team debut on Friday at the age of 17 years and 334 days old; she’s less than half the age of veteran attacker Rapinoe.
