Spaniard Beñat San José named new Atlas coach

The San Sebastian native was unveiled as new head coach of the Rojinegros this Friday and will lead the side in the Clausura 2024.

Beñat San José became the new coach of Atlas FC this Friday. After a long study of the options on the market, the club finally announced the Spaniard as the man to lead the Guadalajara side ahead of the Clausura 2024.

“We can confirm that Beñat San José is the technical director of the first men’s team. The 44-year-old coach born in San Sebastián, Spain, arrives at the Rojinegros with more than 15 seasons of experience on the bench, overseeing clubs on 3 continents and 7 different countries”, explained the club.

“The now helmsman of the Zorros, began his career as a coach at the youth section with Real Sociedad in San Sebastián. The Spaniard’s international career continued through Asia, where he coached Al Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League, a club with which he won the King’s Cup, later he oversaw Ettifaq Club

After his experience in Asia, Beñat San José undertook a new adventure moving to South America, landing in Chile, beginning his history on the American continent with Deportes Antofagasta,” continued the Atlas.

“The Spanish coach continued to gain experiences in CONMEBOL and most recently oversaw Club Bolívar, an team with which he was proclaimed two-time champion and in which his name he set a series for Bolivian football”(...)

“His great work in South America caught the attention of the Al Nasr group from the United Arab Emirates, which opted for the Spaniard to take the reins of their ambitious project. The coach also has experience in Europe, working with KAS Eupen, of the Belgian First Division.”

Beñat already has experience in Liga MX having spent time with Mazatlán FC (2020-21) before his spell in Bolivia. San José has proven to be a winner, who manages to adapt quickly to the different styles of each country. Welcome, Beñat San José”, concluded the Atlas press release.

Although he has experience in Mexico, his time in Liga MX was not exactly positive. In his first tournament with Mazatlán, the Apertura 2021, he oversaw 17 games, with a balance of 5 wins, 5 draws and 7 losses. With 20 points, the team finished in 13th place. For Clausura 2022, he was on the dugout of the Sinaloa team for only eight games and was fired after winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 5.
