As Cruz Azul prepare to take part in the International Football Cup in Veracruz, one of the major questions this summer revolves around the future of Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis.
Remains on Cruz Azul roster for now
A star signing for La Máquina ahead of the Apertura 2024, Giakoumakis has been included in Cruz Azul’s squad for the preseason tournament - indicating that, for now, he remains part of the team despite rumors of a possible departure.
Since Giakoumakis arrived in Mexican soccer in June 2024, he has participated in six official competitions with Cruz Azul, accumulating a total of 40 appearances, nine goals and eight assists.
Over the course of the 1,957 minutes of playing time that Giakoumakis has logged for Cruz Azul, he has been criticized for having an insufficient impact on the team’s results, despite helping Los Celestes to the CONCACAF Champions Cup title.
Will Giakoumakis stay at Cruz Azul?
Although Giakoumakis has been linked with clubs outside the Liga MX in recent weeks, there are currently no concrete offers on the table for him.
The 30-year-old’s inclusion in the group traveling to Veracruz for the International Football Cup keeps the possibility open that he will continue with the club, now under the stewardship of new head coach Nicolás Larcamón.
The friendly tournament will serve not only as part of the team’s preparations for the Apertura 2025, but also as a showcase for players like Giakoumakis.
He could use the stage to stake his claim for a place in Larcamón’s line-up or, potentially, attract interest from other clubs in the transfer market.
