The most costly spot-kick miss of Ángel Correa’s career
The former Atlético Madrid star missed his penalty in the shootout when it went to sudden death. It gave Toluca the chance to be crowned champions.

The 2025 Liga MX Apertura came to a dramatic close as Toluca’s Red Devils clinched their second straight championship, defeating Tigres UANL in a penalty shootout for the ages.
After 120 minutes of play ended in a 2–2 draw, the final was decided from the spot — and it took a record-breaking 24 penalty kicks, the most ever in a Mexican league final, to crown the champion.
Ángel Correa’s second kick is saved
While Toluca celebrated glory, Tigres were left heartbroken — especially their marquee signing, Ángel Correa. The former Atlético Madrid forward and World Cup winner with Argentina had been instrumental in getting Tigres to the final. He even scored the opening goal of the match and stepped up twice in the shootout due to its extended length. But his second attempt proved decisive — and devastating.
On the 12th round of penalties, with both sides locked at 8–8, Correa took responsibility once again. Having already converted earlier, the 30-year-old aimed low to the keeper’s right. It was the perfect height for Toluca’s Luis García, who guessed correctly and made the save that shifted momentum.

Alexis Vega seals the title
With the home crowd roaring, Toluca’s star Alexis Vega stepped up next. He coolly sent Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán the wrong way, burying the shot for a 9–8 advantage that ended the marathon shootout.
The Red Devils secured their 12th league title — and their second consecutive crown — in front of a jubilant Estadio Nemesio Díez.
Correa’s numbers with Tigres
