It’s unclear whether or not Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos was expecting to get this attention from fans in the stadium, but every time he touched the ball in both the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup against Atlético Madrid and the final against Barcelona, the German was faced with loud boos. It took us a few moments to work out why, then we remembered the news we brought you back in the summer of 2023.

Veiga Saudi move linked to Kroos boos

Celta Vigo starlet Gabri Veiga was all set to join Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli in a sensational turn of events, and Kroos had his say as the move edged closer.

In what was one of the most surprising signings in the entire summer transfer market, Veiga was leaving Celta to join Al Ahli instead of the expected European options. The bombshell exploded when Fabrizio Romano reported that the player had accepted the million-dollar offer from Saudi football and that Celta had also accepted the buyout clause money to let their player go.

Toni Kroos calls Veiga move ‘shameful

This transfer news didn’t take long to get a reaction. Kroos replied to the post on Instagram with a brief message: “shameful”.

The German seemingly couldn’t believe that a player as young and talented as Gabri Veiga had ended up leaving for Saudi Arabia at just 21 years old, after having an agreement practically sealed with Napoli. The Spaniard was also on the wish lists of teams like Real Madrid, Barça, United, PSG and Chelsea.

Given that Kroos has played in virtually every high-level match available, these Super Cup boos were never likely to affect him. Well, at least not negatively. Don’t be surprised if he feeds off it once again and leads his Madrid to yet more silverware against Barça.

Kroos responds to crowd after semi-final

The German, never one for hiding his feelings, posted on Twitter shortly after full-time in the semi-final, which Madrid eventually won 5-3, securing their place in the final. “That was fun today. Amazing crowd”, he sarcastically quipped. We see you, Toni.

Real Madrid face Barcelona in front of Kroos’ less-than-adoring fans in a Clásico Spanish Super Cup final in Riyadh on Sunday. A victory for Los Blancos would be revenge for a defeat to Barça at the same stage of last year’s edition and would be their third victory in the competition since it moved to the Middle East and the four-team format in 2019.
