Update:

Monterrey’s iconic soccer club, Rayados, is making a bold branding shift: the team will permanently remove the championship stars from its crest. The debut of the new look is set to coincide with their appearance at this summer’s Club World Cup — the perfect platform as well as the ideal moment to announce the move.

In a recent interview, the club’s Chief Commercial Officer, Xavier Sánchez, didn’t go into detail about the reasoning behind the move but emphasized that the decision to ditch the stars is definitive.

What the stars on Monterrey’s crest represent

Until now, the Rayados crest proudly displayed ten stars—a nod to their five Liga MX championships and five CONCACAF Champions League titles, all earned between 1986 and 2021. Originally, the club distinguished the international honors by embroidering those stars in gold thread, setting them apart from the silver stars denoting domestic league victories.

This year marks Rayados de Monterrey’s sixth appearance at the Club World Cup—a testament to their consistency on the international stage. Unlike many other Mexican clubs whose performances in the tournament have been mixed, Monterrey has earned a reputation for showing up when it counts.

The team clinched third-place finishes in both the 2012 and 2019 editions, and also competed in 2011, 2013, and 2022. That track record places them as the fourth-most frequent participant in the tournament’s history—a remarkable feat for a team outside Europe or South America.

Monterrey’s group stage schedule at the Club World Cup

Rayados kick off their Club World Cup campaign this evening with a high-stakes opener against a struggling Inter Milan—still licking its wounds after a trophyless season.
