América once again finds itself at the center of a defining Liga MX storyline in the Clausura 2026 playoffs, after drawing the first leg of the quarterfinals. Los Azulcremas now head into the return match knowing their place in the semifinals will be decided there.

In situations like this, statistics often take a back seat to what unfolds on the field. Still, when a trend is as pronounced as this one, it’s impossible not to examine the club’s track record - especially in the decisive rounds of the Mexican league playoffs.

América with history on its side

The most immediate precedent saw América play to a 3-3 draw against Pumas at Estadio Ciudad de México, placing the club in a scenario it has experienced many times before in postseason play.

Over the course of its playoffs history, América has been in this exact position on 25 occasions - drawing the first leg and needing to settle the series in the return match to move on to the next round.

In those 25 instances, Las Águilas have advanced to the semifinals 20 times, while being eliminated in just five, underscoring a strong success rate in this type of high‑pressure setting.

There is, however, one notable detail that could work in Pumas’ favor: in most of those successful runs after a first‑leg draw, América closed the series at home. Only twice have they advanced without finishing among the top four teams in the standings.
