“They’re calling me? I got goosebumps”: Thiago Pitarch reflects on first Champions League start at Bernabéu
The young midfielder shares his journey to Real Madrid, bonding with teammates, and the unforgettable reaction from fans at the Bernabéu.

Thiago Pitarch was one of the standout players in Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Manchester City and is quickly becoming a fan favorite. With Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa giving him a chance in the team, Thiago has not disappointed. In an interview for Real Madrid TV, he reflected on the whirlwind of the past few weeks.
Joining Real Madrid
“It all happened while I was training. They told me Real Madrid was interested, and I didn’t think twice. I told my parents yes, and we were on our way. Everything moved so fast there wasn’t much to consider. I started at Atlético’s foundation when I was three, which was right near my house. I stayed there until I was 12, then moved to Getafe for five and a half years. After that, I joined Leganés, and finally the opportunity of a lifetime came - playing for Real Madrid.”

Adjusting to life at the top
“Even in my wildest dreams, I never imagined this. Being around these players, the best in the world… You have to enjoy it and learn as much as you can. I think I’ve integrated really well into the team, especially with Valverde and Brahim. I speak most with the Spanish players, but those two have been a huge help in matches.”
The Arbeloa effect
“He’s very important to me. From the very first minute, he has given me complete confidence. I try to repay that in every way I can. From day one, he’s talked with me, telling me to have personality, to be myself, and not be afraid to show who I am. That’s exactly what I try to do to honor the trust he’s placed in me.”
Feeling the Bernabéu magic
“I heard the ovation just as I was heading to the bench and got goosebumps. I thought, ‘Are they calling me?’ It was incredible. Watching the video later made me so proud. It’s a huge moment for my family and me after all these years of work. I feel the fans have taken a liking to me, and I’ll always be grateful. I will give everything for this jersey and keep fighting for wins like yesterday.”
Family comes first
“They have always believed in me. They taught me this sport from a young age, took me everywhere, and never left my side. They’ve never missed a training session or match. This gift life has given me is really theirs too. Now it’s time to enjoy it with them and thank them properly. They’ve been a huge turning point in my life.”
