The newly revamped 2023 Leagues Cup got underway on Friday as 18 Liga MX teams go head-to-head with all 29 MLS sides with the competition an interesting litmus test to see which is the stronger league.

Leo Messi made the headlines as he bagged a late, late winner for Inter Miami as he made his debut for the Herons in a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul.

Understanding Leagues Cup

The official CONCACAF competition will reach its conclusion on Saturday 19 August. Matches will be played at MLS stadiums in the United States and Canada. Three teams from the Leagues Cup will qualify for the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League.

The 45 clubs taking part (plus Pachuca and LAFC who get byes) in the group stage have been divided into 15 groups of three teams across four regions - West, Central, South and East - based on their geographic location.

The top two teams from each of the 15 groups will advance to the knockout Round of 32. All games that end level in the group stage will be decided by a penalty shootout. The scoring system is as follows: a group stage win earns a team three points, a penalty shootout is worth two points and a shootout defeat will be worth one point for the defeated team.

The entire competition will be exclusively broadcast on the Apple TV MLS Season Pass with Friday night’s games dominated by one song.

‘Tiki Taka Toco’

“Tiki Taka Toco,” has been released by Fuerza Régida and is the official track for the 2023 Leagues Cup.

The track will be featured on broadcasts for the Leagues Cup on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass and also be played at stadiums prior to matches with lead member JOP (Jesus Ortiz Paz) describing the track as “celebration song.”

“Tiki Taka Toco” was produced by Take a Daytrip with JOP feeling that bringing the two countries together for the Leagues Cup helps create a larger moment for the sport and culture. “It’s an awesome idea and it’s more global,” he says.

The track which clocks in at just under two and a half minutes is available via Apple Music, Spotify and all major streaming services.
