Following the introduction of the ‘General Law for Tobacco Control’ which now restricts tobacco consumption in Mexico, Liga MX stadiums will also need to comply with the new law. As of 15 January, smoking is not allowed in restaurants, bars, squares, terraces, balconies, sports facilities, hotels, courts, markets, hospitals, churches and other places of religious worship, public transport stops and will only be permitted in outdoor places enabled for that purpose.

Deportivo Toluca officially announced that their Nemesio Diez stadium will adhere to Article 65 of said law. The ‘Red Devils’ issued a statement claiming: ‘As of Monday 23 January, smoking is totally prohibited inside and at the entrances to ‘La Bombonera’. “We want your experience in our hell to be unforgettable”, closed the club in its press release.

Last week, the Azteca Stadium, home to Cruz Azul and Club América, confirmed the ban on tobacco, as did Atlas FC’s Jalisco Stadium and El Kraken, the Mazatlán stadium.

The first match under the new legislation in Mexico will see Toluca face León in matchday 4 of the Clausura 2023. ‘Los Diablos Rojos’ are undefeated after a draw (América) and a victory (Guadalajara) in their first two games of the tournament. Toluca’s opening game against Atlas was postponed given the poor state of the Jalisco Stadium.
