Ricardo Ferretti was announced last week as coach of Cruz Azul, after eight months without a team having left FC Juárez, an unusual break in a coaching career running since 1991. At various times in his career, ‘Tuca’ had rejected the Mexican national team, even, during his time with the Pumas, stating that he preferred to be a street sweeper over boss of El Tri, although years later he did sit on the Tricolor bench as interim coach.

Ferretti pondered Mexico role

Speaking with ESPN, Ferretti said that in this period of eight months without a job, if the federation had approached him and offered him the national team job, he would have grabbed it.

“Now without a team and everything, if they had offered me the Mexico job, I would have taken it,” he declared.

Tigres over El Tri

Ferretti spent 11 years with Tigres, during which time he was offered to lead El Tri, however, he turned it down and only took up an interim position. Ricardo confirms, though, that he did not want to take it because he had a contract with the club, where he was doing well.

“I didn’t feel good having to say that I had to leave Tigres, although the board told me that if I wanted to leave there was no problem. I had a contract, I felt good with Tigres, I felt at home. I had no intention at that time of leading the Mexican national team,” he added.
