The 24-year-old had received interest from Chelsea this summer but the Cherries offered more than £20 million to sign Adams from Leeds United.

AFC Bournemouth have completed the signing of USMNT captain Tyler Adams from Leeds United to bolster their midfield options.

Adams only joined Leeds last summer but has been looking for a move away from Elland Road since the team’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season.

It was thought that the 24-year-old had a release clause of £20 million ($25m) in his contract with Leeds, but BBC Sport report that Bournemouth have paid significantly more than that to secure his signature.

Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake said: “We’re thrilled to have brought Tyler to the club and he is a player we’ve admired for a long time.”

Why has Tyler Adams signed for Bournemouth?

When he arrived from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, Leeds believed that the young midfielder could go on to be a key player for them in the Premier League. However the club struggled throughout the 2022/23 season, with former manager Jesse Marsch sacked in February.

Adams, who was brought to the club with Marsch’s approval, struggled to show his best form for Leeds as the club were relegated from the Premier League.

Throughout the summer there has been an understanding that a move away from Leeds would suit all involved. Adams wants to play in the top flight, while the club would prefer to be rid of his wages. For Bournemouth, Adams can fill a void left by the departure of midfielder Jefferson Lerma to Crystal Palace earlier this summer.

The likes of Chelsea and Everton were also thought to be interested in Adams. Upon announcing the signing, Blake said that Bournemouth had beaten a number of clubs to his signature.

“It’s been widely documented how much his talents have been recognised in this transfer window by other clubs, so to have him sign for AFC Bournemouth shows the ambition we have as a club.”

Blake continued: “Tyler is an exciting player who possesses plenty of experience for someone that is just 24 years of age and we’re looking forward to working with him as he’s a player we know will be a great addition to our squad.”

Adams is expected to make his debut when Bournemouth host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, 26 August in the Premier League.
