When Union Berlin decided to appoint Marie-Louise Eta as head coach, they weren’t just making a change of the gaffer... they were making history.

Who is Marie-Louise Eta at Union Berlin?

At 34 years of age, Eta becomes the first woman to take charge of a men’s team in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top flight, and by extension, the first across Europe’s top five leagues. While the role is only on an interim basis – following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart after a damaging loss left Union drifting in mid-table – it’s not like the choice is as left-field as some may imagine.

Eta is, after all, no outsider. She already broke ground in 2023 as the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach and briefly led the team from the touchline during Nenad Bjelica’s suspension in 2024. She is clearly respected at the club and now inherits a side still looking over its shoulder despite an 11-point cushion above the drop.

Her mission is clearly to stabilize results and secure survival with the five games remaining in the season. Do that and return some belief, all while extra eyes are focused on her, some more ‘traditional’ followers likely not wanting her to succeed. Women are very used to fighting these barriers in the sport.

Women breaking men’s soccer barrier

Eta’s rise fits into a slow but visible shift across men’s soccer. Also in Germany, Sabrina Wittmann has already taken charge at FC Ingolstadt, while more globally recognisable, Bibiana Steinhaus has taken her place in men’s competition refereeing. In England, coaches such as Hannah Dingley have also stepped into men’s academy and senior setups.

Eta’s appointment, I’d argue, lands slightly differently to the others. This certainly doesn’t feel symbolic or even developmental. There is too much at stake. Money talks and results are needed quickly, under pressure.
