Uruguay vs South Korea preview

Uruguay flew to Qatar as a ‘new’ team with the arrival of Alonso, who took over from Óscar Tabárez due to La Celeste’s bad results with the veteran coach.

From suffering four successive defeats to winning six consecutive games and drawing one before losing their last clash to Iran 1-0.

Uruguay is another of the dark horses of the tournament, and Alonso has openly admitted that their mission is not only to make it to the round of 16, but to go all the way.

Meanwhile, South Korea, who have just conceded three goals in their 10 AFC final stage qualifiers, will try to emulate their Asian neighbors Japan’s upset over Germany.

In fact, South Korea defeated Die Mannschaft four years ago in the World Cup held in Russia, but ended up being eliminated from the group stage after losing to Mexico and Sweden.

Uruguay

Ronald Araújo will probably miss the opener versus South Korean as he hasn’t fully recovered from thigh surgery.

In goals, Alonso will have to decide between the veteran Fernando Muslera and Sergio Rochet, who has played in many international games of late.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Darwin Núñez and Luis Suárez will likely be the chosen ones up front.

South Korea

Paulo Bento will be able to call upon the services of Tottenham’s Son Heung-min, who seems fit and completely recovered from the eye socket surgery.

Napoli’s Kim Min-Jae is in great shape and will undoubtedly be one of the key players for the team throughout the tournament.

Kang-in Lee has also shown his quality in LaLiga, one of the toughest leagues in the world, so he might have more minutes from now on.

Uruguay vs. Korea prediction

Uruguay have delivered some good performances since Alonso took charge of the team, so they will be motivated enough to start with a convincing win over South Korea.

Can the Asian side cause the third big upset of the World Cup? It can definitely happen with South Korea having their star player Son, and that might be a problem for them in terms of being an attacking threat. However, Uruguay’s quality in his roster should prove too strong for the Asians.

Prediction: Uruguay 2-1 South Korea

Who is refereeing Uruguay vs South Korea?
