Lionel Messi was instrumental after leading Argentina to defeat France in a 4-2 penalty shootout on Sunday at Lusail stadium in the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This was their third trophy for the CONMEBOL side and the first one for Messi in his outstanding career for club and country.

Messi has won 35 trophies with FC Barcelona, two with Paris Saint-Germain and two with the Argentina national team, the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. For many, there is no doubt that the 35-year-old has surpassed Diego Armando Maradona’s legacy and news outlets in the United States are praising Lionel Messi for his achievements.

Messi’s glorious career

The New York Times said that Lionel Messi claimed his crown at Qatar and no doubt he can sit in the same table as Pelé or Diego Armando Maradona. This was the trophy that the Argentine international needed to win to be considered the best player in the history of the sport. While the Washington Post mentioned that Messi added the last piece of glory to his extraordinary career.

The Washington Post also claim that the World Cup final was a ‘masterpiece’ between Argentina and France. Both teams delivered beyond expectations and had a special mention to the head coaching staff led by Lionel Scaloni. They compared him to other great Albiceleste managers who won the World Cup such as César Luis Menotti and Carlos Bilardo.
