With a five-game winning streak since the arrival of coach Diego Alonso, Uruguay face another test on Sunday evening against World Cup rivals the United States, who come into the friendly on the crest of a wave after a strong showing against Morocco.

The clash, which kicks off at 5:00 pm (ET) (23H00 GMT) at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City (Kansas), will be the second friendly for both teams since their qualification for the Qatar-2022 World Cup.

The USMNT, who finished third in CONCACAF qualifying, regained momentum with an emphatic 3-0 win over Morocco in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Thursday, while Uruguay dispatched Mexico by the same scoreline in Glendale, Arizona, that day.

Veteran striker Édinson Cavani was back in the spotlight with a brace against El Tri that revalued him in his search for a new team after a dismal last season at Manchester United.

With Luis Suárez absent, emerging talent Darwin Núñez (Benfica), one of the most coveted strikers in this European transfer market, could start against the United States after playing just 20 minutes against Mexico.

Alonso looking to drive on

The friendly clash will have a special flavor for Diego Alonso, who, before becoming the great driving force of the Charrúa national team, had a disappointing spell in the United States with Inter Miami.

Alonso coached David Beckham’s franchise in their debut season in MLS but, despite big-name signings such as Gonzalo Higuain, they missed out on the playoffs.

Eleven months after his departure from Miami, Alonso replaced the iconic Óscar Washington Tabárez last December and guided Uruguay to a World Cup berth with victories in the last four qualifying matches.

At Qatar 2022, La Celeste are drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, Ghana and South Korea.

US looking to maintain momentum

The United States, for their part, need to resolve a number of doubts before traveling to Qatar after an uneven run through the CONCACAF octagonal, which they finished behind Canada and Mexico.

Coach Gregg Berhalter is still trying to solidify a team full of promising youngsters and to fill such sensitive vacancies as that of center forward, where he will choose on Sunday between Colombian-American Jesus Ferreira (FC Dallas) and Haji Wright (Antalyaspor).

The United States had enough against Morocco with several flashes of their star player Christian Pulisic (Chelsea) but on Sunday they expect a much more demanding duel against the experienced Uruguay.

“It’s going to be incredible. A lot of us are young and we’re still getting that experience against such high-level teams,” said striker Tim Weah (Lille), scorer of a goal against Morocco, on Friday.

“We have to stay focused and go out on the pitch with a lot of heart even though it’s a friendly. We want to show that we mean business,” stressed the son of former footballer and current Liberian president George Weah.

The U.S. will face England, Iran and the winner of Sunday’s European play-off between Ukraine and Wales in World Cup Group B.

Possible lineups:

United States: Matt Turner - Reggie Cannon, Walker Zimmerman, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Antonee Robinson - Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Brenden Aaronson - Tim Weah, Christian Pulisic and Haji Wright. Coach: Gregg Berhalter.

Uruguay: Sergio Rochet - Ronald Araújo, Sebastián Coates, José Giménez, Mathías Olivera - Matías Vecino, Lucas Torreira, Facundo Pellistri, Federico Valverde - Darwin Núñez and Edinson Cavani. Coach: Diego Alonso.
