Update:

Hull City secured the final promotion place in the EFL Championship and will join both Coventry and Ipswich in the Premier League for the 2026/27 season. A late goal from Oli McBurnie was enough to send his side into England’s top tier for the first time since 2017.

Ahead of the game, the headlines were anything but match-related. Southampton were caught spying on Boro’s training in the days leading up to the game and their eventual expulsion from the final was what dominated the discourse. Southampton were replaced by Middlesbrough, and the final was set.

The game itself was a tense affair, with Boro edging the balance of play in terms of chances created. But as is the way with cup finals, nerves were the protagonist and clear-cut opportunities to score were at a premium - Oli McBurnie’s header for Hull rattling the bar the closest effort in the first half.

The second half was no different, with chances passing like kidney stones, before McBurnie scored in added time to send Hull City back to the Premier League. It was heartbreak for USMNT hopeful Aidan Morris, who will play another season in the EFL Championship after failing to guide his side to England’s top tier.
