Carlo Ancelotti’s side look to take back the lead in the La Liga title race this Saturday when they take on Villarreal at the shiny new Estadio de la Cerámica (OK, it’s not new, but it’s had a face lift). The team from the capital will travel southeast to face Quique Setién’s Yellow Submarine, who have looked just as likely to sink than float so far this season.

Match preview: Villarreal
The Yellow Submarine - and I know I’ve already used a marine pun - can’t quite get to the surface to take a breath, there’s always something round the corner that pulls them back underwater and forces them to panic. With Quique Setién, the change was always going to be drastic. Unai Emery left Spain’s east coast for Birmingham (nope, me neither) and the club promptly decided to move in another direction completely.
Setién’s style, if sometimes frustrating in its apparent ability to put players in holes and not pull them out, is at least fun to watch. It’s taken a while for the team to adapt - especially before the World Cup where things looked dangerously precarious - but a win against Valencia on New Year’s Eve plus a 1-5 shellacking of poor Cartagena might mean that the tide is turning for the team.
Match preview: Real Madrid
Cacereño held on well in the Copa del Rey last week, until Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes slinked through two defenders and curled a sublime effort into the far corner from inside the box. Madrid made it tough for themselves and the longer the game went on, the more the though of “could Cacereño do it?” crept into the minds of the fans. Alas, it was not to be, and as often happens with Los Reyes de Europa, a moment of magic sealed the deal: this time, it was Rodrygo.
They go into the game level in the league with FC Barcelona, who dropped points in a feisty affair against Mateu Laho- sorry, Espanyol. Now that the Catalan side have slipped, Madrid will be wanting to pounce, and a questionable Villarreal side might be a decent opponent to come up against.
