Wayne Rooney wants to manage Everton or Manchester United: “Managing one of the two would be a dream”
The former England striker and current DC United manager spoke about his desire to manage in the Premier League.
Although everything points to Wayne Rooney remaining in charge of DC United for the 2023 MLS season, the former England striker spoke about his long-term goals, highlighting his desire to manage his two great loves in the Premier League.
These are Manchester United and Everton. England’s record goalscorer (53 goals in 120 caps) said he had a special connection with both teams and he would like to see himself end up there at some point during his time as a manager.
In an interview with CNN, the former Derby County coach spoke about his intention to continue gaining the necessary experience to manage the level that is required in the Premier League, hinting that his immediate future lies with D.C. United.
“I’m still gaining a lot of experience with what I’m doing. I want to learn and I want to go to Everton or Manchester United; I want to go there and be able to give the best version of myself as a coach,” Rooney said in a chat with CNN’s Becky Anderson.
When referring to the possibility of managing one of the two clubs, Rooney described this option as a dream, given he made his professional debut for Everton and at Manchester United he achieved the highest accolades possible for a player.
“Everton and Manchester United are obviously the two clubs that are really close to my heart, so managing one of them would be a dream,” he added.
Focussing on DC United
‘Wazza’ made clear his intention to manage the two clubs at some point but stressed that he will currently seek to develop as a coach in order to be considered in the future.
“It would be naive to say ‘I am going to manage Manchester United next year’, For me it’s about doing the work and developing myself and if I do it in the right way, I feel that these opportunities will come to me eventually”
