What did Monterrey boss Vucetich say about Liga MX playoffs defeat to Pachuca?

After Thursday’s heavy loss to Pachuca in the first leg of the Apertura 2022 semi-finals, Monterrey head coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich was in curt form when he spoke to the media.

After Monterrey were beaten 5-2 by Pachuca on Thursday, it was to be expected that Rayados head coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich wouldn’t feel much like talking.

Vucetich, nicknamed ‘King Midas’, was far from expansive in his responses as he faced the media after the first leg of the Apertura 2022 semi-finals.

Vucetich “angry and helpless” after Pachuca rout

“We’ll analyse the game calmly, I’ll talk about it internally,” he said. “The penalty [missed by Rogelio Funes Mori] is part and parcel of the game; you can either miss it or score it”, he said.

I feel angry and helpless, as we weren’t able to do some of the things that I wanted to,” he added.

Although reporters were persistent in asking Vucetich about contentious refereeing decisions, the 67-year-old would not be drawn on such questions and limited himself to brief replies.

“We have to do the analysis more calmly, and make the appropriate decisions,” he said.

“[Mexican refereeing chief] Armando Archundia was there, he saw everything; they are the ones in charge of reviewing what happens with the officiating, they are the ones who have to make decisions on that.”

Monterrey left with mountain to climb in second leg

As soon as the match ended, Monterrey fans were split on social media: some were hugely critical of the Rayados players, but there were also those who back the team in good and bad.

On Sunday at the Estadio BBVA, there’s likely to be an atmosphere of contrasts as these two factions of fans meet.

To advance to the Apertura 2022 final, Monterrey must defeat Pachuca by a three-goal margin. Mission impossible? We’ll find out this weekend.
